I found this a little interesting, and at least different than the usual top games lists: 59 levels to play before you die (http://www.gamesradar.com/f/59-levels-to-play-before-you-die/a-2008031215574892048)

I’ve only played through 25 on their list. I agree with Fort Frolic, The Roivas mansion, Lethal Dusk, The Aztec level, Unforseen Consequences, Rainbow Road, Meryl Rendezvous, The Milkman Conspiracy, RE4 Chapter 2-2, The Silent Hill Historical Society, The Falling Ship, and Shalebridge Cradle.

What are some memorable levels in games you’ve played?

Here's what I came up with off the top of my head:

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (Air Filled Tunnels)
Call of Juarez (Chapter X, kidnapping & highway chase sequence)
Deus Ex (Escape from Majestic 12 detention)
Fahrenheit (Confrontation)
Half-Life 2 Episode Two (Our Mutual Fiend)
Knights of the Old Republic (The Star Forge)
No One Lives Forever (gondola ride down & shooting out choppers)
Portal (The final testchamber, all the way to GLADoS)
System Shock 2. (Ops, where you meet Shodan & reprogram simulation units)
Thief 1: Dark Project (Cragscleft prison)
Thief 2: Metal Age (Life of the Party)
Undying (Onieros)
Vampire Bloodlines (Ocean House Hotel)
Witcher (The Old Manor, Javed’s stronghold)

*Remember this is about levels, not the games. The game itself doesn’t have to be a critical success. Even mediocre ones can contain a couple epic levels.

Can haz bioshok?

I liked Fort Frolic (as the list said) but I always thought that Welcome to Rapture and Medical Pavilion were the best!

I'm apparently not much of a gamer.. I've only tried 6 of the 59 games mentioned in the '59 levels to play before you die' article.

Don't know if it is the most memorable level I've ever played, but I clearly remember the first time I tried Chapter One: Roscoe Street Station in Max Payne

Nice thread idea. :)

Just a few off the top of my head:

Goldeneye 007 - 'The Facility' - my favourite level in the game, great in multiplayer too. Just don't harass the scientists too much! :)

Duke3d - 'Hotel Hell' - another classic - you have to play this co-op with friends on the hardest difficulty setting.

Zelda 64 - 'Water Temple' - not my favourite level, but imfamous for being extremely tough.

MGS3 - The sniper battle with The End. I've raved on about this level a few times on this forum... it's basically hide n' seek, in the jungle, with military toys and sniper rifles - just brilliant.

Since Silent Hill2 was mentioned, I'd throw in the early stages of Resident Evil 2 - in the police station. Probably the defining level for the series, imo (but yes, you guessed it, there's a top secret biolab underneath )

Silent Hill4 - The Room - and I mean the actual room (which works like a hub). The real levels are a bit so-so; but liked how they presented the guy's appartment, and how it slowly transforms from a sanctuary to a hellish prison. That, and the best scares happen here (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hfa3EBvjbA0). Probably not scary when compiled into a single video, but over the duration of the game, it starts to get to you.

Wow, I've played a lot more of those than I would have thought I had.

Ugh, if only I could remember level names in the better games. I get too wrapped up in playing to usually remember or care.

The only thing I would add to the list that hasn't been mentioned here already is American McGee's Alice -pretty much the whole game.

Tsk tsk. Threads like this shouldn't be left to die. :nono:

My favourite level in Serious Sam has to be the Valley of the Jaguar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qz93tiEuvUg) (skip the first 4mins, sorry it's one of those videos with lame commentaries over it). A lush, open field, peacefully surrounded on all sides by mountains, with a small pyramid in the centre. Of course, being a Serious Sam game, it doesn't take long for all hell to break loose. This is the first time in SE where the game throws nearly everything it's got at you, and then some.

But enough talking about it, if I remember correctly, it's included in the demo, so play it for yourselves:

If you've never played Serious Sam before, I can't think of a better introduction to the game.

Speaking of mass mayhem, who can forget...Doom II: Dead Simple (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W23JZvp3gdk)

God yeah, that was actually the first thing I ever played of the game. It was like "So what's so special about... Woooah!". Really looking forward to Serious Sam HD.

Here's a couple of my favourites.
- The last level of the latest Prince Of Persia was epic. The endboss and the stuff afterwards.
- The hotel level in Condemned 2. So moody.
- The Milkman Conspiracy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OF7aIWxfgnA&feature=related) level in Psychonauts. I couldn't stop laughing about the G-Men.
- The 4th year in Grim Fandango. (I'm a Tim Schafer fan)

I'm surprised at a few of those (the very few I've actually played, that is).

Halo: CE - 343 Guilty Spark. If I had to pick any level from that game, it'd be Halo. Maybe The Maw.

The Darkness: Jackie and Jenny. I did like the moment, I'll admit, but no mention of the opening construction site.

And speaking of construction sites, not even a shout out to Max Payne 2.

Yeah um... some other ones (okay i suck at level names... so this will be more descriptive than naming them):

the Library/School level in American McGee's Alice, and the chessboard bits... and the lily pad bit, and the frozen bit... ah the whole thing! fricking awesome game!

Hitman: Silent Assassin - any of the early missions... hm... the one where you start in the subway and have to steal the russian dude's clothes and use your sniper rifle that looks sorta like an ak from a distance to kill the dude in the meeting and then sneak away.

final level in portal

de_dust on a lan

the level in abe's odysee where you first get to control one of the important dude's (can't remember so long ago... probs like level 6 or 7 or so... actually maybe there was one in level 1?)

the monaco race track in gran turismo 3 a-spec with one of the unlockable formula one cars

the bit in fallout 3 where you go find your dad trapped in that place (i won't ruin it for you) but it was awesome trying to escape.

thief guild quest line in oblivion

the bit in crysis where you storm the base with four towers and it's kind of up a hill...

the bit in Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines where you go into that crazy guys house (the one where you confront him at the end in the bottom) and all the rooms are crazy filled with crazy people and stuff. (I agree also with the earlier comment about the oceanside hotel)

stalker:soc when you go into that research laboratory and into that tunnel...

max payne - the dream sequences when you're tripping out on v

um... i'm forgetting sooo many... contra - final boss level

devil may cry - second fight with that dark blob thing

dead space - zero g boss fight

secret of monkey island - any and all sword fights

any of super metroid (get dosbox and play it!)

I dunno if that counts, it's more of a Boss battle than a level. Although, if I had to add a level to the list, it'd be the fight with The Sorrow, also from MGS3. I guess it's classified as a boss battle as well, but it's a bit unconventional. Just the fact that the entire level was designed around the player's previous gameplay choices was mind blowing.
