Moderator note: As Alan Wake wasn't featured at the Microsoft conference, I thought it would be best to use this thread for general discussion about E3 2008 and the games featured.
Please use the following thread for Alan Wake related E3 discussions: http://www.alanwake.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1624
Thanks
In case you guys want to watch it. I know, Alan probably won't show, but it's rumored. So I thought, what the hell?

I'm not sure.
But Shane Kim is out right now, and hasn't mentioned Alan Wake yet. Grim news indeed.:(

Is this Microsoft press conference the only possibility of seeing AW at E3?
Is there any chance of seeing anything about it from Tuesday - Thursday, like through a follow-up or some shit? I don't want to have to wade through anymore "we get a new XBOX Live user every 5 seconds" corporate ball massaging if there's no chance.

Hi Carl, good to see you! How's it going?
Are you guys attending this year? :)
I don't want to have to wade through anymore "we get a new XBOX Live user every 5 seconds" corporate ball massaging if there's no chance.
I'm so glad you said that and not me. And to answer your question, if they don't mention Alan Wake today, then no, I wouldn't expect it to be showcased later in the week. But who knows?

There goes Shane Kim so doubtful of any showing of Alan Wake now. Ahh well, Tokyo Game Show it is then.

Final Fantasy 13 on the XBox360... that's quite a revealing business move. Might be worth watching the Sony conference now to see how they respond.
Btw, I'm moving this to general gaming, since there was no Alan Wake info.

I have to say that that was one of the most boring conferences I've sat through. I'm not interested in any of those games at all, well possibly except for Rock Band 2 but I doubt I'd even get that considering the high price of Rock Band as it is.
I don't know if it's because I'm getting tired of gaming in general but I kept shaking my head in disapproval at everything announced and nothing really excited me.
Yeah, FF13 was quite an announcement !
I think there was nothing really spectacular for microsoft : singstar remix, buzz remix, eyetoys remix, live arcade, sequels... I'm not taking about the TV/MSLive fusion, which is quite depressing from my point of view.
Quite disappointed with Square games, especially the last remnant who could have been a FF14 as well :/
And no Alan Wake...
And I have no 360, I wonder why I watched ^^

Viva Pinata trouble in paradise put a huge grin on my face. Oh my God. I can't freaking wait. Do wish I saw Alan Wake, today.

You're not alone there ADM. When you think about it, almost all (?) of those AAA games were sequels - Gears2, Banjo3, Viva Piñata2, Guitar Hero (4?), Rock Band2, Portal Online, FF13, etc. By no means a bad lineup, but nothing brand new in the original IP front. The new square-enix game looked promising, but that was about it (unless I missed something) .
Most of the new stuff basically seemed like a rather blatent attempt to compete with Nintendo Wii on the casual/family front. It might work out, or it might backfire - let's wait and see. Although that 'Your in movies' does look great fun for parties.
But... "Through The Magic of Software™"? :)
EDIT: Here's a summary of the main announcements:

It’s getting to the point where saying you are a gamer or paying attention to the industry is superfluous to most not directly involved nor wanting to be. People don’t say they are a movie-watcher, and slowly people won’t generalize by saying they are a gamer, but rather it will be socially assumed everyone dabbles in games to varying degrees to entertain themselves, and the initial questions will change to which type of games tickle your fancy. But yeah, the games industry has been saturated with crap for awhile now. Typical fare for an increasingly corporate/consumer driven machine.

FF 13 for xbox 360?! That is good for 360 owners...
But i am dissapointed that there wasn't any info about Alan Wake...

Other than FF XIII, that show was terrible. And since I already own a PS3, the FF announcement didn't do anything for me. I thought it was great that AC/DC was announced for RB 2 (my favorite band, my favorite song too Let There Be Rock). The South Park game was interesting, seeing as how that's my favorite show.
But other than Banjo, I don't see myself getting any of those titles for 360 that were shown off (minus FF XIII but for PS3). It was cringingly embarrassing to watch them dance and act. It was awful.
I can't wait to read Shane Kim's answer as to why Alan Wake wasn't there again. Someone will ask him. They always do. And he'll provide the same response.

Through the magic of software, I'm really excited to announce that I've changed this thread into a general E3 discussion thread now that the Microsoft show is over. The Nintendo one starts in just under 3 hours and the Sony one in about 5.
People don’t say they are a movie-watcher, and slowly people won’t generalize by saying they are a gamer, but rather it will be socially assumed everyone dabbles in games to varying degrees to entertain themselves, and the initial questions will change to which type of games tickle your fancy.
In which case (given what we've seen at E3 so far), instead of genres like 'FPS' and 'RPG'; I'm wondering if the various AAA action adventure games will eventually be seen as the games equivalent of pop music (or 'pop/rock' to broaden the categorisation). It's easy enough to label the casual/party stuff along those lines, but I'm more thinking along the lines of the big budget 'Hollywood blockbuster' style games.
Chris Crawford has quite an interesting view on this (http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20060612/murdey_01.shtml). Not sure I fully agree with him (a wee bit too jaded for my taste), but he makes some good points, nonetheless. Also, the idea that the games industry (as we know it today) will merely become a subset of a much larger interactive medium, is an interesting possibility.

Comic books were around during most of the 20th century, but it wasn't until the 1970's that the term "graphic novel" came into use when referring to comics with more complex and mature storylines. Video games need a similar term to describe the subset that includes titles like Deus Ex, Bioshock and Alan Wake. It's just not appropriate to bunch Mass Effect together with Mario Kart... um... personal experiences in the Mako notwithstanding. ;)

Nintendo's press conference is on at the moment.. for some reason I have a gut feelings that they will announce a new handheld. Especially after Satoru Iwata's spiel about pioneering in the hardware field.
EDIT: Ok maybe not.. :(

He states the obvious of an industry going through its growing pains and trying to figure out itself, then blabs about his concepts that sounds awfully like the rehashing he skeptically denounces. That aint an interesting view, it's every Tom, Dick & Harry's view that want's to "revolutionize" and "change". Always be wary of those who criticize the state of things then pimp a new catchphrase that promises to fix the woes.

Well, all 3 are done now, and tbh, none had a stellar showing. Nintendo was the worst. Not one game for the hardcore. What happened to Zelda, Icarus? Maybe at TGS. Hopefully they show more Mad World and The Conduit.
Sony had an o.k. showing. inFAMOUS looks great, and God of War III looks beautiful (like we all knew it would).
But of course, the show stealer? LittleBigPlanet. The Sony sales level they showed off with LBP was genius. God I can't wait to get my hands on it this October.

Gleaning through the plethora of deluged feeds from popular gaming sites, the one thing that caught my eye was the gameplay and promo video’s for Resident Evil 5. I think the site that had them was VE3D or EvAv, can’t be bothered to hunt for them.
I’m horribly unfamiliar with the series, but I enjoyed the heck out of RE4 Wii, and it was the most popular game friends played when over at my apartment, rather than your typical Wii Sports or Guitar Hero.
Unfortunately it looks like a Wii version is either not happening or delayed, and the gameplay looks exactly the same (not that the gameplay was bad, but I can’t imagine another 20 hours of going through the exact same motions).

I had G4 on TV last night for about five minutes (they were live at E3, of course). I immediately got bored seeing the same shoot-em-ups playing behind the hosts.
I'm not an FPS player, so frankly, seeing that so many of the "new" games look exactly the same to me was dull.
I didn't even hold out any hope to see anything remotely like Alan Wake and so changed the channel. Seems this thread is confirming my choice anyway.
So, here's the question then: What does total silence about AW at E3 mean, exactly? I mean, not even a one-sentence update? That just can't be good, can it?

Austruck, no AW news is not good news. But it's not bad news either.

E3 2k8 Rap Up
http://www.attackslug.com/E3%202k8%20Rap%20Up.mp3
Lyrics:
Microsoft come's out and tries to raise the bar
Fable, Gears and Fallout, well here's your gold star
RE5 co-op, and yes and we all cheer
though it still sucks that we can't play it till next year
Avatars are the new way to see your friends though
they still manage to rip off Sony and Nintendo
new dashboard interesting for sure
what i really care about? 16x10 support
and it'll be the day when you see hell freeze
if someone buys a system for You're At The Movies
Wada comes out for some RPG's
one more thing, Final Fantasy
Sony fans, bitter tears, watch em drown
nothing that i love more than a good old fashioned meltdown
and speaking of down, look down Nintendo way
everybody slingin hate at Cammie Dunaway
photoshops keep on comin, ain't about to stop
why would you even open up your show with Carrot Top?
MotionPlus should have been there in the first place
Wiispeak will bring the little kids hatin on race
you guys are rich as hell, yeah yeah we know
Ravi Drums, animated gif of the show
then we see Reggie up on G4
telling us Animal Crossing is for the hardcore
man, what the hell was you thinkin?
but props to Remo for confirming a new Pikmin
on to Sony's show, and they need to atone
why didn't they show just a little more of Killzone?
Resistance 2 looks awesome of coarse
but i've still seen bigger bosses in Earth Defense Force
they're clingin to that 10 year plan like granite
best sales chart gos to LittleBigPlanet
still no release for Home, and that blows
Fat Princess, best game name of the show
you roll out some video market place tricks
and 360 1up's by you partnering with NetFlix
once again you remove the BC
and we finally get a teaser for God of War 3
i don't know what i want to play more looking ahead
EA gets the love for Mirror's Edge and Left 4 Dead
yeah i know it's publishing, and it's really Valve
Carmack show's off Rage, and they cut to the crowd
Lost Planet movie? man you must be kiddin me
trailer of the show goes to Duke Nukem Trilogy
Microsoft pulls a new Bungie trailer
Dead Rising Wii? let me get my inhaler
I am Alive has potential they say
as long as everybody doesnt focus on Jade
Ubi announces more crap, and thats no shock
Capcom, i gotta ask you man, what the Flock
no Captain Rainbow, didn't think i'd see it
Fallout 3, well its looking pretty decent
Ninty says E3 is not for core gamers
we're the ones watching, so that's really a shame sir
when all is said and done, there were still some no shows
Gran Turismo 5, and where was Team ICO?
i know, GC, Tokyo, lets begin the wait
this has been E3 2008
attack slug, bout to get out of here
with any luck it'll be better next year
