View Full Version : Character Name Meanings

While playing through the game a few of the characters' names jumped out at me as being meaningful (Alan's being the most obvious, as it was referenced in promotional material). I decided to go through all the main characters and try to find meanings for their names that seemed relevant. I just used Google, so I can't swear to the validity of any of this info, but I did try to cross-reference where possible and only mention things I could find more than one reference to.
Keep in mind I'm not trying to imply that any of these meanings were intended by Remedy (though I bet at least a few were), just that they may be interesting to note, given what we know about the characters. I couldn't find anything that seemed meaningful to me for some of the characters, so if you have anything to add please do!
-------------
Alan Wake: "AWAKE" seems obvious, but I couldn't help also making the connection to one's "wake" after death after the word showed up in The Sudden Stop manuscript pages. I don't think this means that he's dead, but it sort of highlights that additional meaning of "wake" as in "keeping watch over." ETA: my husband reminded me of the water-related meaning of "wake" (which I can't believe I didn't think of) as in the wake behind a boat, or "leaving things in your wake." Considering he changes the course of history for a town, I think this applies.
Alice Wake: "AWAKE" and "wake" also apply to her, although of course she herself isn't keeping watch over much.
Thomas Zane: Thomas means "twin" in Aramaic (hm..). In Hindu, "Zain" means "godly light."
Barbara Jagger: Reference to Baba Yaga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baba_Yaga), as has been confirmed by Remedy. Additionally, St. Barbara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Barbara) became the protectress against fire and lightning after being martyred by her father.
Barry Wheeler: Barry means spear, but I can't figure out how that would be relevant..?
Cynthia Weaver: Cynthia was an epithet of Artemis, the Greek goddess of the moon (light in the dark?).
Sarah Breaker: Breaker is fairly obvious from a light/power/electrical standpoint. ETA: Also, "breakers" as in waves.
Rose Marigold: Both flowers, which obviously need light to grow.
Agent Nightingale: Well, the "night" part is obvious. But the bird has a distinct singing voice, and as far as we know, he doesn't. =) HOWEVER, this is pretty fascinating, though I don't know how it fits in: famous nurse Florence Nightingale was known as "The Lady with the Lamp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Nightingale#The_Lady_with_the_Lamp)." I just refuse to believe that's a coincidence, even if it does seem like Cynthia's so much more the obvious fit.
Emil Hartman: Emil is of Latin origin, meaning rival or emulate, copy. Pretty fitting for our friend Hartman who can't channel the power of the lake on his own and has to use other people's work to do it. ETA: also from my husband, totally forgot of the "deer" meaning of the word "hart." Possibly coincidence, but given the importance of deer in BF, especially during Deerfest, seems worth mentioning.
Anderson Brothers: Well, they made up their names, basically. Norse gods. But apparently Odin means "frenzy" and Thor means "thunder," interesting in relation to the St. Barbara legend above.
Clay Steward: A steward being a guardian, this could refer to the fact that he "guards" the knowledge and secrets of Bright Falls, Nightingale's research, etc. It could also eventually lead to something relating to the lighthouse.
Rusty: ?
Pat Maine: ?
Mott: ?
Carl Stucky: ?
Paul Randolph: ?

Wow, some of these seem like too much to be a coincidence, but other than the few I think this is a case of seeing things where there are none.
Sry, just being honest.
The nightingale thing I noticed too. Maybe somebody thought it out like that at Remedy, but then it got f***ed up. Maybe Cynthia was supposed to be Nightingale, and the agent was supposed to be Weaver.

Definitely interesting, and I'm sure the main characters names aren't too much of a coincidence. However it could be a matter of seeing meaning where there is really nothing. Eg. in the "ending theories" forum someone brought up the prevalence of the number '6' in Alan Wake. This was discredited by Remedy.
That said, I completely agree with Thomas Zane, Clay Steward and (possibly) Emil Hartman. I'm positive that both Alice and Emil have some 'splainin to do regarding the events in Alan Wake 1. We haven't seen the last of them!
As for the more secondary characters (ie. the ones at the bottom), I don't think their names add anything to the story and/or theories. But I like your insights.

I want a DLC where the main NPC's name is Edward Drivers, and where he introduces himself with "Drivers, Ed". It would be an add-on that plugged in large drivable maps and manual shifting and would include lessons on basic driving theory from Ed Drivers.

There was a picture of a cool monster truck kind of thing in the pre-publicity pictures. I was kind of hoping I'd get to drive it.
I think we're now definitely off topic.
I wonder how many of those interpreted names are co-incidence and how many were intentional (we might actually find out if the remedy staff drop by).

Maybe saying remedy three times makes one appear...
Remedy remedy REMEDY!
Barbara Jagger: Reference to Baba Yaga, as has been confirmed by Remedy.
Interesting side note: Baba Yaga of the fairy tales lived in a cabin which had chicken legs holding it up. BIRD LEG CABIN anyone?
I highly doubt that they are just going to lay out for us. ;)

I'll have to make sure to read it all.

I like to think that Barry's name is just an homage to Resident Evil and Silent Hill Homecoming, because he literally looks like what you would get if you took Barry Burton and Deputy Wheeler and mashed them together. :p I'm probably completely wrong, but hey, it's a fun thought.

Celeste

Yeah, I definitely think a lot of it is coincidence (though some is clearly intentional). As I said in the intro, I'm not trying to project meaning where it doesn't exist, though I think it's always at least remotely possible that the writers made subconscious connections without knowing it (I think there's some truth to the idea that someone "looks like a Barry," etc.). Mostly I just think the historical and cultural significance of the names is fascinating with how it fits the characters and premise of light and dark.
I actually thought the sixes thing was subconscious too, like it was one of the writers' favorite numbers or something and they just kept using it without realizing it. Not exactly just a coincidence but not meaningful either within the context of the game. But maybe Remedy can discredit that if a lot of different writers used the number independently.

It was a great read, though I am wondering, did remedy make a mistake when they named Tor? After all the god's name is Thor.
Tor has another meaning as well, though in a fictional language, Tor means justice in Mando'a (Mandalorian language in star wars... great now I feel like a complete nerd...)

no no you are doing it wrong, not enough metaphors and you need to run it by your editor:
"Hatesink typed furiously on the keyboard, a man with a mission. The darkness swelled up around him, living, breathing, ready to strike when the dull glow from the monitor was eventually extinguished. Until then he had time, time enough to write one last post, pleading for answers, desperate for any information the developers could give him. In due time, they would respond."
You're welcome.

Cynthia Weaver: Cynthia was an epithet of Artemis, the Greek goddess of the moon (light in the dark?).
Let me fix you this, as I'm a Greek guy.
Artemis is the Goddess of the Hunt, not of the Moon... It's also confirmed in the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artemis).
The Greek language of Artemis is this Άρτεμις, by pronouncing the tone on the letter "A". It's still substantial. Some ancient Greek names are extincted, such as Perseus, Pegasus etc.

I was always taught while studying Greek mythology that she was goddess of the hunt *and* the moon, with Apollo being the god of the sun. It mentions the moon on the Wikipedia page as well, although it does say that these attributions came later.
Also, I'm fairly certain "Tor" is a variation of Thor.

That's true, but Artemis is well known the most of being the Goddess of the Hunt either in Ancient Era or the Modern Era. If she were to be known as the Goddess of the Moon, I'd know it and agree with you.

She is indeed attributed as a lunar goddess in modern paganism, but almost as a more broad definition on top of her status as a goddess of the hunt.
Edit: Wikipedia also states that:
"Artemis later became identified with Selene,[5] a Titaness who was a Greek moon goddess, sometimes depicted with a crescent moon above her head. She was also identified with the Roman goddess Diana, with the Etruscan goddess Artume, and with the Greek or Carian goddess Hecate."
Gods and Godesses evolve over time, hence the assimilation of different pantheons into different cultures. As a modern pagan myself I must admit it can be a little obtuse :D

Anderson brothers - Their surname means "Son of Man" (also used symbolically in the character of Thomas Anderson a.k.a. Neo in The Matrix). So they're literally sons of man who through the power of the lake have turned themselves into gods, even going so far as adopting first names from Norse mythology.
Pat Maine - I took his surname to be yet another shout-out to Stephen King, seeing as most of his novels are set in rural Maine.
One very hazy connection that I so badly wanted to be true after hearing the end credits song - if Thomas Zane is Alan's father, that would make him Alan Zane, which sounds vaguely like Alladin Sane... No? What, no I'm not stoned, just a sleep deprived Bowie fan :)

I thought I'd add one here if you don't mind!
Rusty - Yeah, he's my favorite character but I thought this might be relevant to the conversation.
Rusty is the complete opposite of Alan, he is old-fashioned, quiet, slow to anger and thoroughly respectful of those around him. He loves nature and is extremely kind, almost to a fault.
Whereas Alan is short-tempered, at times arrogant and extremely distrustful of those around him other than Alice. He looks at Bright Falls as a town full of "hicks" and "crazies" and is unimpressed at the natural beauty around him until they arrive at Cauldron Lake.
Now let's take these two and add Rose to the equation. Rose obviously idolizes Alan as he represents the glamour of fame and all that entails. Rusty is just a normal guy who loves her but has none of the money and glamour Rose wishes for. So while Rose is kind to Rusty she shows Alan far more attention and respect. I'm not demonizing Rose here, she is young and obviously not to bright, she has had a hard life and wishes for better and Alan represents all of that.
Clearly if Rose knew Alan better and had a firmer grasp on reality she would see that the man for her has been in front of her the entire time - Rusty.
And of course we have the obvious with the name here - Rusty. Whether this is actually his given name or just a nickname it fits him thoroughly. Old-fashioned, slow to change, etc. Rusty = rust. Age. He's 36 and Rose is 22 and he is thoroughly aware of the age difference which is more than likely why he hasn't been more aggressive in pursuing a relationship with her. He even still wears his wedding ring and dreams of a day when Rose will tell him to take it off. We can see him fiddling with the ring in the diner when Alan is getting the keys to the cabin.
I hope this helps or enlightens or adds something to the great work already done here! I could add a lot more from the book but I think I've gone on long enough! And NO I don't hate Alan, he's awesome, but he'd better write Rusty a happy ending!

Thank you!
Nice work Celeste. Also to Crankymisfit. Although I’m a little bit late here, I would like to add on some of the missing names.
Mott: Like a moth? The Modern English word "moth" comes from Old English "moððe" (cf. Northumbrian "mohðe") from Common Germanic (compare Old Norse "motti", Dutch "Mot" and German "Motte" all meaning "moth"). Perhaps its origins are related to the Old English "maða" meaning "maggot"
Carl Stucky: Get stuck all the time. Maybe in the toilet?
Pat Maine: Main man? Main Squeeze?.........Who’s?
Maybe Barbara’s?........Oh-oh! This is intriguing.

It just occurred to me that in the Alan Wake universe, Pat Maine may be the inspiration for the fictional character of Max Payne. That is to say that Alan Wake wrote Max Payne (and maybe Alex Casey) about Pat Maine. Pat Maine comes across as a former law officer from the way he confronts Agent Nightingale.
Bah, I just watched the ferry scene and realized that Wake has no idea who Main is at the beginning of the story. Although it is quite curious that Maine is traveling into Bright Falls with Alan.

Well, that's no big mystery -- the ferry runs between Bright Falls and the neighboring town of Watery. Locals use it all the time; it's no different from taking the bus, really.

Two things on Alice and Alan:
I was thinking Alice was given her name because she "went down the rabbit hole" sort of say. Similar to the character Alice in the famous "Through the Looking Glass."
Alice's name meaning: Noble, kind.
The name meaning of Alan: Harmony, Stone or yes, Noble. Originally, it belonged to a saint.
And the surname Wake dates back to the Norse-Viking word Vakr which translates to "keeper of the watch," and later migrated into the Norman inhabitants of England which was a name for someone who was "watchful, or vigilant."
I found a site to the surname and saw: "People with this name tend to be orderly and dedicated to building their lives on a solid foundation of order and service. They value truth, justice, and discipline, and may be quick-tempered with those who do not. Their practical nature makes them good at managing and saving money, and at building things in the material world. Because of their focus on order and practicality, they may seem overly cautious and conservative at times."
Ironically, there's a Thomas Wake that migrated to New York in the 19th century when he was 31 years old. (I just found this to be a funny coincidence. Or is it?)

Ok, I'll take a stab at this: Barry Wheeler... only thing that comes to mind is the phrase 'wheeler and dealer' "One who advances one's own interests by canny, aggressive, or unscrupulous behavior."
Sounds a little like our lovable literary agent.
Uh... kinda think you're the one that might need to chill.
Oh I’m always chilled, Dude! It just takes me close to the edge when people single me out for no apparent reason at all! All I did was express myself to Mikki, knowing that he can’t see me or my reactions to his post. All I did is to merely show Mikki my emotions with my words. That’s it! You see, the world is already full of troubles and cruelty! I just found Mikki’s post to be amusing, that’s it! No “sarcasm” to anyone. None at all! I just want to express myself to Mikki that with all this cruelty going on with our world, he managed to make my day with his post. That’s it!
Take a look at the title of this thread – “Character Name Meanings” – This thread is suppose to be just for fun! No need to make a big fuss out of it because we don’t even know if what we are posting here is even meaningful or just plain coincidental to the narrative of the game! These names may mean something or maybe mean nothing at all! It’s all just for fun! “Coincidental Fun!”
Even Mikki’s post doesn’t seem to sound “sarcastic” at all. Mikki does this sometimes to some of my posts, too, in some other threads. But what do I do, I take it with a grain of salt and laugh about it! Sometimes I jab back at Mikki with a joke and call it a day! No need to make a big fuss! Because Dudes and Dudettes, this thread is suppose to be just for fun! These “Character Names” may mean something or nothing at all! Alright?! So, when people start pointing their fingers to other people and accuse them of “sarcasm,” that ain’t right either.
Regardless, I would like to acknowledge everybody’s contribution to this thread. Great job everyone and remember, this “Character Name Meanings” is just for fun! No need to make a big fuss about anything!

Thomas Zane: Thomas means "twin" in Aramaic (hm..). In Hindu, "Zain" means "godly light."
I believe Thomas has the exact same apperance as Alan, and there proof to back it up.
In the dinner when you first meet the Andreson brothers the call you Tom so they think that you are the same person. And Thomas means twin in Aramaic.(Thanks Celeste!).
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
In the end when Alan is in the dark place near the cabin,he hears Thomas having a discussion with Barbarra and then (literally) pulls her heart out. What interesting in this conversation is that Thomas has the same voice as Alan's!!!

This misunderstanding between me and “inferi” has been settled! But you want to dig it up again! What does this say about you now?...
“War-monger!”
I don’t care if you read my posts or not. Who cares! This is just a game. But you, you want to show the world who you really are, don’t you?!
Go ahead, show the Whole World what a “Self-Centered War Monger” you really are!
