Hi. I just finished the game for the first time and i have some questions/doubts about the story.
I really liked the story, it was original both in a game and movie perspective. The problem is that instead of the plot being revealed entirely by cutscenes it focused to bit too much on ingame moments and manuscripts. This is good because it makes the player thinks and adds more depth to the plot but It begs for a second playtrought so the player can understand the story better and catch all the manuscripts. However, i donīt have much time to play games and i would liked to dedicate my gaming time to other games instead of replaying other ones so Iīm going to be a lazy one and post my doubts here.
Anyway...iīm babling too much, iīm going to the point.
I didnīt understand which were Hartmanīs true intentions. Why did he want to keep Alan on his "hospital"? Why did he lie about Alice? Why did he want the entire manuscript? Was he aware about the Dark Presence? Did he really die? Why was Moot following his orders?
Thermos. Whatīs the point on collecting them?
I was going to post some questions about the ending too but itīs useless, there are already many posts about it.
Discuss!

I don't think Hartman knew about Alices real fate. I think Hartman really though she had died, and just tried to benefit from the situation. I mean the treatment at the CLL must cost a pretty penny. :)
I don't think that Hartman was in league with Mott. They just happened to be in the same hunting group (the painting/photo in the Lodge). At least I don't remember it being said somewhere that Hartman would've been Mott's boss.
Here's what I gathered:
Hartman was aware of the power of the Lake and the Dark Presence (he knew Thomas Zane). Essentially, he wanted use Alan as a tool to manipulate reality. However, what exactly he wanted to do is unknown. At least I don't remember him reveal what his plan was. Mott did work for Hartman, but on the sly. The bit at the hospital was Hartman trying to manipulate and "brainwash" Alan into doing his bidding.
Thermos collecting is probably a reference to Twin Peaks, that or Alan is a caffeine junkie.

I think Hartman knew exactly what was going on, and his plan revolved around getting Alan to finish his manuscript so he could exploit the whole situation. Mott was hired to retrieve Alan from the lake after the cool flare off the ledge incident at the end of chapter 4 right?

I've actually been trying to figure out more about Hartman as well. From what I've found out it seems that he's been around Bright Falls ever since he was young. He worked as an assistant for Thomas Zane and was part of the reason why the dark presence was released in the first place. He had Mott attempt to get the manuscript from Wake. He's a really interesting and manipulative bad guy and I don't think he gets fleshed out enough. Hopefully we see more of him somehow in DLC or the sequel.

Where from and how did you come to this conclusion?
Thomas Zane was a poet, who lived with his loved one, Barbara, at the Bird Leg Cabin. Then the Dark Presence awoke, with Zane's poetry giving it strenght.
It took Barbara as its mannekin and used Barbara to goad Zane into writing itself free. Zane realised this, and fought back, taking Barbara into the depths of the lake.
He left his books as a gateway for himself to come back to help, if anyone should later arrive and awake the Dark Presence again.
I think you got your facts wrong, or I need to read whatever you read in order to concoct that theory of yours.

He's right, Hartman name is Emil (discovered it in the Alan Wake files) the Emil of the yellow writing (don't trust Emil) and there's a manuscript page that describes Emil Hartman's intentions.
First post, hi everyone, excuse my english, i'm french. ;)

This is true. To be honest, Hartman's link to Thomas Zane and to Mott is explained pretty extensively in a handful of manuscript pages findable on Normal or Hard.

Yeah, the name's a giveaway, Hartman introduces himself in the game, after all. Ok, then it seems I've missed a pretty important part of the story.. damn. :D

Thanks U.C. So, after all, Hartman was aware of the dark presence.

Essentially, I think this is what Hartman wanted to do.
The manuscript pages mentioned how he was happy to be the editor, so essentially he knew about the Dark Presense and the power it has from previous experiances with the Andersons and wanted to tweak the manuscripts that Alan would write so what Hartman wanted to come true would. I guess he thought he could keep the Dark Presense under control. BIG mistake, buddy. :p

Dr. Fartman wanted to use Alan to manipulate the power of the lake. He used his succesful -claimed methods and failed drastically.
