I know its an old game but still one of Remedy's best such a shame the FOV is only correct if you use a 4:3 aspect ratio in a window any chance Remedy could fix this so that 16:9 & 16:10 monitors can display it properly with an FOV slider??

Thanks

Rockstar now own the Max Payne games, therefore it would be up to them to fix any issues, not Remedy.
Your next best option is for the mod community to come up with something.

Unfortunately the mod community cannot do anything its been this way since 16:10 + 16:9 displays came out in the mid 2000's all it would take is someone who knows how from the original Max Payne2 PC team to tweak it a little as when you switch the resolution it stretches the FOV as it does not scale to compensate for the increase so it looks horrible as Max is squashed!

Yeah, it would require a code fix - can't be modded.

But not exactly an easy thing to patch to that -- digging out the old code and build environments (Visual Sourcesafe and VS6.0..), fixing, testing nothing breaks (I think we had visibility triggers in Max that may have some FOV/aspect dependencies) etc.

AND after that there would be a host of other things that our fans would want if that can of worms gets opened - like the Vista sound issue... :)

Plus of course what Morry said.

Do you still have the old code? Would it be possible that you ask permission from Rockstar to make an unofficial patch to support widescreen properly in Max Payne games?

Or then someone from Remedy could just make a quick fix and leaks it to the internet. ;)

Plus of course what Morry said. Shame as it spoils the atmosphere playing in 4:3 the PS2/Xbox1 version's have the correct FOV in 16:9 but I guess its because they were coded slightly differently.

Thanks for the answer anyway perhaps Rockstar will request a Max Payne 1 + 2 HD remaster from Remedy after Max Payne3 ;) as Max Payne2 especially is still a terrific game even today :) those dream sequences do some amazing things to the screen using the buffers & on CRT displays especially its never quite the same on a modern TFT!

I just played through Max Payne 2 again recently and while I was a little annoyed at the slight distortion on my non-4:3 monitor I easily forgot about it and just enjoyed the game. I assumed if there's an easy fix for the aspect ratio it would have been done by now. Obviously its not that easy.

I wish Remedy could/would do something about it,

BUT, I take it that modern graphics cards and their drivers, have aspect ratio controls. So you can play the game as intended with a 4:3 ratio even on a 16:9/16:10 monitor. Sure there will be black bars, but come to think of it, that's not a terrible thing (it's like when people first watched DVDs, they were very disappointed widescreen films had big black bars on their 4:3/5:4 TVs, but eventually everyone got used to it - and later upgraded to widescreen TVs I guess).

I found a widescreen fix for KOTOR 1 & 2, so in some games it can be fixed, but obviously not in Max Payne 1 or 2. I still keep looking for a widescreen fix whenever I play Max Payne again, though, just to get disapointed again; I guess I'll never give up on that *sigh*
