View Full Version : I can't even fathom those top scores

The best I've gotten is 60800 on Ghost Town, granted I've played Fight Til Dawn a total of 6 times but still, those scores are unreal! How am I supposed to challenge that?

It's crazy the scores that some people can get. I played Cemetary about 10 times last night trying to get a decent score - my best was 78 000 (Firewarrior32, 10th place when I left), but that was only for the first map, and the highest score was over 100000!

What I've found is key to getting the best possible score, is remaining un-hit for as long as possible while taking out as many enemies as possible as quickly as possible. The best I've done is about 7 minutes undamaged with 69 kills. There are people who will have lasted the whole 10 minutes undamaged, of course, and with more kills.

Just keep at it, I reckon. That's what I'm going to do!

I was just so happy when I left for class this morning and my Ghost Town score was #9! Now it's around #100 :S

I have trouble dealing with enemies surrounding me, even though I play Alan Wake a lot I never was good at dodging enemies effectively.

02-22-2012, 11:42 PM
I am surprised at how good my reaction skills are. Sometimes I won't even be able to see a Taken, I'll get this feeling and tap Dodge, and it goes slow motion as one tries to slash me in the back.

I've memorised the locations of the Flares on the map, so I have them for those exact situations. The strategy I've developed (and this is only for Cemetery as it is the only map I've played on), is to keep moving but always watch my back.

I'm really glad that Alan turns his head in the direction of the nearest enemy regardless of which way the camera is facing - its a great way to keep track of where the biggest threats are.

My score is probably in the #100s now too...

Also, it seems as though every time I get on a great streak and start to get comfy, bamsuddenlydarkgrenade.

Grenadiers are heart breakers man.

Saracenar
02-22-2012, 11:57 PM
Yes! I hate grenadiers with a passion! They've ruined my streaks more times than I like. I always try to take them out as soon as I know they are on the map - failing that, just keep moving. They have pretty good aim though, so usually you want to get rid of them as soon as you can.

I just tried my first Nightmare map.

Dear god are there a lot of enemies, I spent more time running than actually fighting, and I didn't even survive 7 minutes!

I haven't had a chance to check, but is my Ghost Town score still up there? It's Qeuw and I had a score of 120-thousand something, but been busy to check. Probably beaten by now though.

There's some tricks to do slightly better, though.

You're currently holding 2nd place. The first place guy has 142500.

Alright, I'll have to beat him later then. Thank you. XD

Also, I'll copy and paste what I said in my review for tips.

"This mode I found to be quite a bit more challenging than the game’s story mode. There’s an increased focus on survival, but also on doing well in matches. Your best score gets recorded on an online leaderboard for incentive to improve or get a better score than your friends. There are a few key ways to do a bit better in this mode though (at the time of writing I’m topping nearly every leaderboard compared to the other reviewers. Come on, other reviewers, pick up your game!).

Firstly, sometimes it’s best to wait to kill an enemy rather than kill them straight-on. The game has a Score Multiplier, which decreases over time signified by how much “Color” the number of the multiplier is filled up by (the Score Multiplier fills with color from the bottom to the top as you do well in the game. When it completely fills to the top, the multiplier goes up by one, with a cap of x9.). Killing enemies does fill the gauge, but it’s filled almost twice as much for successful dodge maneuvers. Now, of course, you don’t get points until you’ve killed an enemy, but sometimes it’s a good idea to be more defensive and raise your Score Multiplier and then take on the offense when it’s high rather than to simply kill everything in sight. This makes for an interesting cat-mouse scenario when trying to go for high scores, especially since a single hit will knock your multiplier back to one (and it drains over time as well). Also, it’s a good idea in the last 30 seconds or so to clear the map of every enemy and let the next enemy wave begin, as if you survive till dawn the sun breaks and every enemy on the arena currently is killed and added to your final score."

I'm currently 29th on Cemetery with a score of 85,300. I don't like to speak of possibilities but I have no doubt that if I saw that one Dark Grenade I probably could've gotten to 100k.

I had 83K with 20 seconds left, a whole new wave just spawned and I had an 8x multiplier. I planned to use a nearby safe haven and a flare to survive.

10 seconds left I get hit by a splitter and my final score ends up being 90,050 instead of what would've been well over 100k and easily in the top 10.

I really want to punch something.

Trust me, especially towards the end you have to be careful. In the run in Ghost Town I had some SERIOUS close encounters that almost screwed me over but I barely managed to make it through. One particular highlight in my memory was when I was getting surrounded by all sides with no flares and I tried running to this one corridor that was nothing but a small dead-end, turn my back to the corner and just rapidly flashed and shot all of the Taken which were just streaming right into my small corner.

It surprisingly worked though, but there were many close encounters.

I'm gonna keep trying because I'm determined to break the top ten in Cemetery, but I did the math and that Splitter hit was the difference between 25th and 2nd place.

EDIT: Well after a few more attempts I finally broke the 100k barrier. Now I'm up to 12th place. My undamaged streak was only 6 minutes though so no achievement yet :s

You need to get the multiplier to 9 as soon as possible - dodging attacks whenever you can is a good tactic.
Then all you have to do is kill all sons of bitches till dawn and make no mistakes. I haven't even cracked the 100k barrier yet, but that is basically it.

what do you do to get 100k on these maps, Dubscythe? And do you mean the normal or nightmare maps?

I mean the normal maps.

On the first few waves I do my best to get a high multiplier, leaving a single enemy just to dodge him over and over until I get a 5x+ multiplier.

Afterwards I'll make sure my ammo is filled up go to a spot on each map that is a pretty good choke point. Here's what they are:

Cemetery - From where you spawn you make a left and you sill see a small area surrounded by a wall that has two entrances. A Safe Haven will be in that area right in the middle, so if you stand on either side of the light the Taken can only come at you from one direction. Wait until the end of waves to refill your ammo and be extremely careful of Grenadiers.

Ghost Town - Go directly forward from your spawn and pick up the Crossbow, immediately go to the right and there will be an ammo box and Safe Haven; it's the same idea, the light will cut off one side of the walkway and will funnel to the other side if you're standing next to the ammo box.

This is how I got both of my 100k+ scores, though I'm slightly annoyed as I didn't get 'Poetry in Motion' for my Ghost Town run even with an 8:50 undamaged streak.

Quick Edit: For Cemetery I used a Revolver and Combat Shotgun, on Ghost Town I used the 9mm and Crossbow.

jester131
02-24-2012, 04:39 PM
You need to dodge whenever you feel save to do so (when you're surrounded with 3 or more taken close to you dodging is a bad idea)
If the crowd gets too big run away to make sure that there are no taken attacking you from behind. That way you can also burn away the darkness on several taken at once when a bunch is closing in from only one direction. You gotta be careful with the small ones though. They like to flank you.

LonelyGreyWolf
02-24-2012, 04:50 PM
Indeed, some of these scores are insane.

Just played some nightmare maps, and while the enemies come at a faster pace, you also get more weapons. Seems like the ammo box doesn't refill though; on Nightmare Ghost Town I ran out of ammo and couldn't find any more. I also find it a bit annoying how long it takes to unlock a chest and switch weapon. I realized that you gotta drop a flare before opening it and switching gun. I really got over-whelmed on that map, with splitters and grenadiers all over the place. Nightmare on cemetery wasn't so bad though; I only played it once and got a decent two stars.

My best score so far is on Oil Field; close to 100,000 points. I haven't been playing all that much arcade mode though; I've only played every map once or twice.

Yeah it worked! On Ghost town anyways and ive shot up to 91st with 90100 and could have got over 100,000 if i had gone out and dodged a few.

Where you start you will see an ammo box and safe zone. Simple stand by the box but dont go into the zone that way Taken cant come from behind and they can only get to you via the small steps at the other end of the walkway.
Only ones you have to worry about are the taken that chuck grenades.

Not sure it will work on Nightmare because the ammo wont restock as much[ran out of pistol ammo 3 times and crossbow once.

I've just jumped into the arcade mode after finishing up the story. It truly is one of the better survival modes out there, if not my favourite.
I believe it was on Caves that I managed to reach the number 12 spot at some point! Alas, I was certain the leaderboards would shift so much. :P It is always around the last four minutes I lose my multiplier by some luck. Thankfully, the mode is too much fun to get frustrated with, I just wish I knew how people score so well on Nightmare... I can barely get a finish let alone 3 stars!

Nightmare Maps are just torture. Ghost Town, I stuck with the bow for most of it, rocking the revolver as my side arm.
I seem to have the dodge down, but keeping the multipler to get a decent score is another problem once the hordes start to amass.
I just praise Remedy for making the stars the easy part, competing for scores the hard part, for Nightmare when comparing scores. Surviving is a true task on them.
Managed to swipe Number 10 on Cemetary, normal, for awhile. Truly hooked on this.

Well, I could use some tips.

I can't seem to get my scores higher than about 70.000.

I get my multiplier up to 9 by dodging the first two taken, then kill them. I survive the whole game without getting hit once, killing everything I see, but when the time is up I have something like 50.000 - 70.000.

I'm killing them as fast as I can... what am I doing wrong? It's like there aren't enough enemies to kill.

Maybe I shouldn't be waiting for them to come to me, but run around as much as I can until the final wave?

Thanks, but that's exactly what I do, lol. I've explained two times above.

I get my multiplier up to 9 as quick as I can. (Usually have about 8 mins left when I do) Start killing, don't get hit at all, end up with 50.000 - 70.000 points consistently. Like I said before, it's like there aren't enough enemies.

I must be doing something wrong. Typically, I'll be waiting next to the ammo box and kill everything I see. I've found that running around doesn't magically spawn more enemies or anything.

Maybe I shouldn't be just making kills all the time, but take the time to dodge them too?

By the way, how often did you use lit safe zones? Or looked for supplies at the beginning or later? Or refilled ammo?

I'm mostly playing Ghost Town, where there's a lit safe zone next to the ammo box, so they can't approach me from behind. Sometimes I play cemetary, where there's a sealed off area with a safe zone in the back. But the light only goes on after a few minutes into the game.

Anyway, I usually only go for ammo when I'm almost out. I'll grab a few flares or a flaregun for emergencies, but that's it.

I'm guessing I don't pay enough attention to my multiplier. When you're waiting for a new wave, the multiplier goes down pretty quickly. Perhaps I should dodge a few times when a new wave comes and start killing when my multiplier is high enough again.

I'll try that.

I like the looks of Ghost Town and this level has really nice atmosphere, but I just don't like its architecture, it's not for my gameplay style. The best levels for me are Oil Field and Trailer Park. There you can also find Magnum, the best weapon for getting highest scores, coz it's A) very powerful B) has no recoil C) works very well at long distances. Magnum is the key, really. For levels like Cemetery or Ghost Town, I don't really know the recipe for success.

About multiplier: when you know the new wave's approaching, run towards them, get to know where more or less they spawn and always run towards that direction even if there's no one spawned yet.

Thanks for the tips! And yeah, I love the Magnum.

Hey guys, instead of calling the Assault Rifle "AR", can't we agree to call it the M16? Thanks.

Or just Assault Rifle.

can you be a bit more specific about that, Valttu? :)
I'm 24th on the overall leaderboard atm, darn. I was among the top 10 once but to get more than 1 mio. seems impossible to me.

What I'm saying is that if need be, just keep dodging the first guys in the level and pick up supplies while you're at it, and only "start playing" after you've spent a good amount of time doing nothing. This way you have a much better chance to play the whole game without being hit, and it's really important that you have a REALLY high multiplier when the timer hits zero.

I just fought my way to the top spot once again, but I'm afraid I can't do this for long. The grenadiers are completely ruining the game for me. It's so infuriating to have played 10 minutes perfectly just to lose your multiplier after the time has already ended... Not to mention getting direct-impacted by a nade when you're doing well. Grenadiers are just... just gay. :P

Kudos to those who have hit 100k. I'm finding it pretty tough to get close it. My best is 78k on Ghost Town, I believe. It's just difficult when you start getting to higher waves and more enemies start coming from all directions.

I'm at 158.200 in Cemetary now I believe. And now it's getting really tough.

Does anyone know specifics on what drives the score up/down other than the multipier?

Does ammo-ing up at the chapel bring it down?
Does accuracy mean anything?

Any clues friends?

Think the best ive got on a nightmare level is around 40K. They just dominate you so fast.

Ok my best on Nightmare is just under 60K. Any tips?

I did my first Nightmare map on ghost town and i did pretty good what i did was that i just rushed the flares and flashbangs (much more important than guns) then went for the sawed-off and a combat shotgun (near the end of the round it takes 3 rounds to kill)

If you want some general tips 1. Rush the flares and bangs 2. once you have a group following you get them into a tight corridor and get them to the end of the space and flare and bang then just use the light then spray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper:
hoped this helped:D
Edit: also on the last minute get the round done quickly or if not get them to chase you and let the runners get close and dodge dodge dodge

For me, the caves are the best (over 100K on normal, and over 70K on Nightmare). But, as others have said, it's hard to beat yourself, especially when that one errant Grenadier decides to kill your roll. :) Very very challenging, though, and very addictive!

I've finally managed to break into the top ten on cemetery with a 183.700 points. What a ride! If it wouldn't have been for that stupid grenadier at the wave before the last, the sun would have wiped the last wave out with a 9x multipier. Probably would have been around 200.000 then.

I still wonder how people can make over a 240.000, though o_O (pic already too old after 1 day)

Wow, nice work ^

That Sir Gippobeater has been up there forever! I'm sure he got the highest score physically possible. There's only so much you can do in ten minutes!

True. No even by standing on the coffins in the down left corner by the lantern I can get even close to my actual score, takes way too long to kill them, and doesn't work for me.

I wonder what kind of glitch the top 3 found. Sorry, I don't want to accuse anyone of using glitches (or even cheating), but It's very hard for me to imagine getting so much more than even 200.000 points.

I wouldn't even be surprised if they did it without 'glitching' though.
