Why NO Free Camera with Mouse + Keyboard?...... Blame Micro$oft?
i mean obviously over at Remedy they probably use mouse and keyboard when recording all those fly through the map for Alan Wake trailers and all. I mean this game was built on PC then ported to 360 and Remedy is not giving us Free camera support with mouse and keyboard, instead they force us to buy a fat 360 controller. Im smelling this as another Micro$oft and Remedy agreement, a timed exclusive. So it'll force us to buy a fat 360 controller to make some $$$$ for M$ first before giving us the mouse and keyboard free camera support.

Re: Why NO Free Camera with Mouse + Keyboard?...... Blame Micro$oft?
No, its a bit more complicated than that.
During development, the game is designed to be developed with all three control methods at once - the controller moves the camera and Alan around the game world whilst the mouse and keyboard can be used to input developer console code or alter in-game items. In the final build that was released on 360, only the controller part was activated. For the PC version, new coding had to be added so that the mouse and keyboard could perform the same functions as the controller. This now creates a dilemma because the mouse and keyboard can't perform developer functions and move Alan around at the same time. Due to all of the fan requests, the team unlocked a function that would allow the player to free-roam using the existing controller method. To code for the same functionality using keyboard and mouse would require a lot more work...its like porting the game all over again. As for the fly-through videos from the early PC development days (e.g. the PC IDF 2006 demonstration), you will notice that the person controlling the camera was using a 360 controller hooked up to a PC. What is the Next Big Thing? Stay tuned... |

Re: Why NO Free Camera with Mouse + Keyboard?...... Blame Micro$oft?
i mean what's the mouse + keyboard lacking that the 360 controller doesnt? Nothing, you can assign loads more buttons onto the keyboard than you can a controller. I mean you're acting like the Mouse + keyboard is holding back Free camera mode, it's Not. Tons of PC games allow free camera with mouse and keyboard just fine. This must be a timed exclusive feature, part of Micro$oft's plan, just like Alan Wake 360 and American Nightmare

I suggest you read what Morry said again. He just explained why you need the 360 controller to use the free camera mode, and you seemed to have completely missed the point. It's got nothing to do with Microsoft.

Other gamepads can work too but Xbox 360 controller is the best. I bought it just for this.

Trust me. Using a 360 controller is tonnes better. And you're blaming microsoft for this? Lots of PC games use Xbox 360 controllers for stuff like this. Why not a PS3 controller? Because its not really supported on PC (not what you asked, but still). There are games out there which aren't even on the Xbox 360 but are on PC and still support the Xbox 360 controller as well as a keyboard. Shall we blame microsoft there? |

I should also add that when you see the camera fly by in cinematics, those aren't being done by a person playing the game and pretending to be an airplane, but by creating camera paths. It'd be very hard, if not impossible, to get really smooth movement of the camera if you were to do it manually -- just like it's extremely hard to get smooth tracking shots in real life with a freehand camera without something like Steadicam.

It amazes me how some people can take something positive done by the devs for the community and through twisted logic turn it into a negative. Don't worry, the level headed ones among us are very appreciative of your extra efforts to make us happy

I wonder if you can somehow emulate the xbox360 controller on keyboard? There might be some programs for it.

Re: Why NO Free Camera with Mouse + Keyboard?...... Blame Micro$oft?
You guys are still ignoring the question, can it be patched in? Ofcourse it can but there are No answers at the time because it's a timed exclusive for Micro$oft. That's the obvious answer than Remedy don't want to answer. The entire Alan Wake life cycle have always been a M$ first then PC gamers last. Quit using this 360 controller is superior to everything, that's just an excuse to hide the Timed exclusive deal with Remedy.

Re: Why NO Free Camera with Mouse + Keyboard?...... Blame Micro$oft?
We've said countless times that development controls were mapped to the 360 controller during initial development on Alan Wake and it would require us to redevelop the whole controlling schemes to get it working via keyboard and mouse.
Sure it can be patched it. Will it? Doubtful as it really was something we added because we thought it'd be fun to give the community the option and as such it really isn't worth the time and costs to redev just for one feature. It has nothing to do with Microsoft (Alan Wake on PC is published by Remedy). Sorry to bust your extreme and "obvious" I'm on the Twitters! @sidetwo |

Re: Why NO Free Camera with Mouse + Keyboard?...... Blame Micro$oft?
It's just an extra feature that we knew people would love, so we enabled that, because it was easy for us to do. Unfortunately, doing more than that with it would not be easy. Of course, we could have just never let anybody use it ever, at all, and then we wouldn't have to deal with accusations like this. Would that have been preferable?
This is like setting out free candy for everybody to enjoy and then somebody starts screaming about how it's evil that the candy doesn't come with a conveyor belt that gets it all right into his mouth. It's a sad state of affairs, but I'm afraid building the conveyor belt system is too much work for us right now, sir; if you want to get the free candy, you're going to have to meet us halfway, and if that means you need to shell out some money for bus fare or whatever it is that would fit this analogy, I'm afraid that's just one of those things we all have to live with. The candy's there, and you're welcome to it, and if you don't think it's worth the trouble, that's okay. Like the occasional stupid remark? Follow me on Twitter: @MikkiRMD |

Re: Why NO Free Camera with Mouse + Keyboard?...... Blame Micro$oft?
Thanks for the reply, but I still don't buy it. I mean you guys are acting like the 360 controller is a God controller only capable of doing this ordinary PC feature. As if during development mouse and keyboard was used for coding, moving the camera, settings, etc but when it came to moving the camera freely, Bamm someone needs to find a 360 controller or it couldn't be done. It just doesn't sound real. But for now I'm still sticking to my belief that this feature (which is to advanced to be accessible through mouse and keyboard) is just like Alan Wake 360, and American Nightmare, one Damm good deal with Microsoft

There are other controllers too that work with PC. It doesn't have to be Xbox 360 controller

Re: Why NO Free Camera with Mouse + Keyboard?...... Blame Micro$oft?
I'm gonna beat a dead horse and point out (just because I don't want anybody to get the wrong idea here), you don't need a game controller from any specific manufacturer, regardless of how convinced Mr. "I Have Nothing to Back Up My Claims, So I Must Declare It Obvious" over there might be.
Any standard game controller will do; you can probably pick up a used one on eBay for a couple of bucks, if you're so inclined. We're not really talking about a major expense here, and this is obviously something you can use on any number of other games as well. Like the occasional stupid remark?
