Lantern vs. Flashlight
Looking at the trailers, theres parts where Alan is holding a Lantern, others where he is holding a Flashlight (holding it wrong with a gun btw, correct position should be flashlight hand palm down and thumb in, light shining out, gun hand rests on top of flashlight hand).
![]() As far as game mechanics go, both could be useful to have. A lantern wouldnt have a focused beam and wouldnt illuminate quite as far, but would be better for general examination of everything immediately close. Flashlight, well, Doom 3, nuff said. Now considering what little we've seen so far, the enemies are suspected to be photosensitive. In this case, a flashlight with a more intense focused beam is more of a weapon and a lantern is more of a defensive tool, to keep bad guys out of range but doesnt hurt them unless they are within like 10 feet. Does anyone else think it would be kind of cool to have BOTH a Flashlight and a Lantern, or to use either as a bit of a gameplay mechanic? Thinking back to some classic horror films, the original Alien specifically, the scarriest creature is the one you CANT see, or only get brief glimpses of...

Re: Lantern vs. Flashlight
I reckon you should be able to choose to have one or the other, but not both at the same time. Maybe the flashlight is to begin with, as its soft glow is less intense than a torch beam.
Sorry, who says you have to hold a torch & gun like that? maybe if you were experienced and whatnot, but Alan isnt. he's a simple writer who is scared in the dark. If he doesnt want to hold a torch and gun like a pro, dont force him.

Re: Lantern vs. Flashlight
Alan's just some regular book writer. I wouldn't be surprised if he had never used a gun before the game starts..

Re: Lantern vs. Flashlight
I like the idea of being able to choose between one or the other.
As far as making the character feel a little more vunerable, maybe one of the characters should point out to him at some point in the game how to hold a flashlight and a gun. Show he isnt combat experienced, more human, and something the players can relate a little better to also, being that most of you arent combat experienced. Not that actually having combat experience is a good thing tho, just thinking of how to make characters in the game feel less shallow, a mistake that many other games fail to do is to give the player a way to relate to the character they play... |

Re: Lantern vs. Flashlight
While we're well aware of the tactical gun/flashlight poses, as RTsa said, Wake is not a police officer or SWAT trained, so that's one reason the stylization is a bit different.
There are other reasons too but they would get into game design

Re: Lantern vs. Flashlight

Re: Lantern vs. Flashlight
Flashlights are used as melee weapons by police officers, or space marines (Doom 3), also the idea to start a fire with the oil lanter is cool. Burn the wold! Burn it all!

Re: Lantern vs. Flashlight
would Remedy choose to give you an LED lantern rather than an oil one? I hope not...

Re: Lantern vs. Flashlight
Lantern: If you are working on ground, or in a room / tent, it's OK. But its size might be bigger than regular flashlights. If you are alone and need to search something, then it's not the best choice.
Flashlight: The most important advantage of it is focusing. You can search with it, and can use it as a weapon too. For people whose hands need to keep free, I think headlamp is better. But most of them are not good at throwing. Enjoy some photos on flashlight! ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Lantern vs. Flashlight
Yee, it would be nice to have plenty tipes of flashlaghts and lanterns - so anyone can choose his type. What it would be? "Maglight 4d" - heavy alluminium stick with the length of half a meter, or "Fenix LD20" - small and safe, with the battaries that works 3-4 hours. Or some modern monster like "Fenix TK40" with his 630 lumen that is comparable to thoose of the car's headlight.

Yeah, the flares it's very cool...like on E32009 Gameplay...Sometimes, when i'm too tired and listening Deftones, i stay on my bed, imagining this "scene" to Alan Wake : " Alan is running through the forest with a group of "Shadows" behind him, chase him. The "Shadows" begins to throwing axes and others "weapons" on him direction. One of the axes reaches his arm, causing a little cut. Alan falls and starts to creep back, trying to hide. But is too late: Around him, several "Shadows" notes him. Alan picks up his flashlight and turn on. The "Shadows" turn back a bit, in pain. But, the light start's to twinkle... and begins to fail until it's gone completely..."

Re: Lantern vs. Flashlight
I remember someone from Remedy mentioned we could use lights from cars to aid us. I bet the monster truck would help alot with those extra lights on top and at the front.
I could not think of other light sources maby if alan ran out of flashlight batteries he could use some candles and matchstick or Alan finally loose it, go kamikazae, set his jacket on fire and make a run for it
