Death Rally for Windows released
Remedy released the original Death Rally for PC in 1996. During the years, we've received loads of emails requesting Death Rally for current operating systems, and today, we're happy to announce the re-release of the original Death Rally for Windows 7, Vista and XP.
It's available as a FREE download TODAY and we hope you like the nostalgic experience as much as we do. Support is provided in this forum (please help your fellow visitors!), and a FAQ is available here (there's also some info in the readme, available after you install). |

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
So I'm guessing you can't release the sourcecode? That would definately renew Death Rally since modding and the availability to create a modern multiplayer are hot these days.

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
There seems to be a problem when downloading the program with Google Chrome. The download only gets 30 megs and then thinks its finished. Odd, works with Firefox though.

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
Ok, sorry for the slow download speeds for the first few hours... That should now be fixed, we didn't expect such a sudden popularity.
Also the immediate panic reaction was to copy the file over to this forum site (that has much more resources than our company's own web server), which might have caused some connectivity errors to the forums too. Now the file is hosted totally separately, and should have enough bandwidth... (knocks on wood). - J |

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
Oh my dear lord, this is just awesome
Death Rally was the first game i have EVER played on my OWN computer.. Brings so much memories, this is just breathtaking. I used to have a legal copy of this, but a large speaker dropped from my table and smashed the cd I remember asking few years ago a soundtrack from Death Rally, but i found it once on internet

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
I noticed an issue. I accidentally did the first installation in wrong folder and when I used the uninstall.exe the uninstaller deleted not only the Death Rally files, but every file that was in that folder (not the folders in that folder luckily).
To explain further, I installed into F:\Games\ folder and noticed I should've installed DR to own folder, used uninstaller.exe and all the files in F:\Games disappeared. But luckily sub-folders like F:\Games\Fallout3\ etc. were intact. So nothing serious happened to me, just lost few installation packages. Thank you for releasing this great game for free! |

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
Awesome stuff guys, I have very fond memories of playing this at network games well over a decade ago.
Any chance of getting IPX networking enabled? Yeah, we still have that protocol installed, as Atomic Bomberman is a game we still play at LAN games and that requires it too. |

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
Huge thanks for this release!
I haven't yet gotten to download and try it, but according to the FAQ, multiplayer is disabled because it was done via IPX? IPX multiplayer is possible in local area networks and also over the Internet using for example Hamachi, so if there's an easy way to enable multiplayer (only for IPX), please do it.

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
On a side note, if you get old DOS-games to work in Dosbox, it is possible to play these old classics in multiplayer over the internet, because Dosbox can somewhow emulate a dial-up modem and "call" an IP address instead of a phone number. I can't remember if this worked in Death Rally or not, but I'll give it a try soon.

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
Yeah, that's a really great news. Thank you guys.
I noticed that we earn significantly more money during the race in this version than we used to in the good old game. Is it a choice you made, or was I really, really lucky (3 "$500" items in 20 minutes seems a bit surprising to me). NPG seem also a bit less... aggressive (but i'm not sure about that...). Anyway, thank you again. My old DR CD didn't work anymore, and I got bored using Dosbox. You really made my day

There shouldn't be any differences like this; not intentional, in any case. Some math (like random number generation) may work out slightly differently because of different compiler.

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
Fantastic news, I played it all night and completed it. Man it's just as addicting as it was back in the days. Oh well, I'm playing it all over again but taking my time this time round... I love it when you go from Sentinal to Shrieker, those double guns kick ass.

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
I wish to thank you guys for this awesome game! Again. =)
I have played this game a lot when I was a child. About the release, I'm more addicted to old school games (I have a PC for DOS games, hehe) but this will let the gamers who missed this fantastic game feel the experience of a very good game. |

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
The moment i saw that this game is re-released for pc i was more happy than any other game release would be.Thats a great job.Really that new made my day.
Too bad death rally is such excellent game it almost cant be improved.jk Maybe if you put more tracks. And make game's quality be like 720p.( i know this game can run at big rezolutions but, the quality is old ) |

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
Death Rally is image based, so increasing the resolution to 720p won't really increase the detail. If you wanted more detail then the actual images would have to be redrawn.

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
Thanks all, glad to see you enjoying it as much as we did! This port was really a hobby project for us, and it's fun to see people like the results so much.
Hamish: it's not only the visible art to be redrawn, but the AI is "image based" too if I recall correctly (meaning the most popular routes on the track are weighted by colors on the image). |

Re: Death Rally for Windows released
You guys are awesome! I always love it when developers show love for their old games.
A question though: Now that you've released this (awesome) ported version of Death Rally as freeware, should the original DOS version also be considered freeware? |
