Interview with Chris Forsyth (Jake from Bright Falls) - Post questions here.
i already posted this once sry about the repost
OKay so anyway, Christoper Forsyth *jake" and i have been talking and i asked him if he could take some questions from all of you awesome people at AW Forums- so is anyone interested? If so ill see if i can get him to come on here someday or even Facebook to answer some questions- if i cant do u guys want to make a list of questions for him and just forward it on? Its up to all of you? Hes a pretty good guy, but has a busy schedule, but also takes time out of his schedule to answer his fans individually- thats right he actually sends emails back. This goes through his agents and then to him and he responds personally. SO what do u guys think? Here's a copy of the email i got back from him- (so u know im not BSing you. RE: bright falls ... From: Christopher Forsyth ... View Contact To: Robert Valentine Hey Robert, No worries man – and no charges for emails! Regarding Conventions: I don’t know the answer to that yet. Public appearance requests always get set up through my managers – so all I do is show up. I don’t know who would arrange convention appearances for Alan Wake / Bright Falls – either Remedy or Microsoft. But if they do go to a convention and request me to be there, I’ll be glad to come. And I have no problem signing pictures and DVD copies - at a convention or otherwise. Regarding taking questions at Facebook or the AW Forums, sure – no problem. Let me know the best way to set that up and we’ll make it happen. Great to hear from you. Best, Christopher (if u want emails as well i can provide- just dont flood me lol and yes it is him)

Re: SO who wants to interview Jake on these forums?
Wow, that's awesome that you'll be interviewing him!
![]() Could you ask how he got the role and what really stuck out about it to him? In a horror story, the victim keeps asking "Why?", but there cannot be any explanation. The unanswered mystery is the one that stays with us the longest, and it's what we'll remember in the end. |

Re: Interview with Jake (post questions here)
Did you have any knowledge of the Alan Wake game story before/during the shooting, and how did it feel partaking in a prequel to a video game mini series? Different then other projects or very similar in aspects?

Re: Interview with Jake (post questions here)
Question 1: Like what slasherjpc and Bryan108 asked, do you play video games? And if so are you going to play Alan Wake?
Question 2: Did you have any control over the story? Question 3: Did you know about Alan Wake before being cast for Bright Falls? Question 4: If Remedy wanted you to be a voice actor for the next Alan Wake game would you do it? Question 5: What consoles do you own (if any)? Question 6: Have they let you play the game when doing Bright Falls? Is The World Getting Smaller Or Am I Getting Bigger? |

Re: SO who wants to interview Jake on these forums?
Quote:
Hey GunGrave TZA:Thanks for your questions. To the first one: I got the role through the standard casting process, which usually goes something like this: The production was cast by Mary Vernieu, a very well known and respected Casting Director in Los Angeles. She put out a casting notice to Agents & Managers for all the different roles in the series, and my agents / managers submitted me for the role of Jake. Mary then called me in to read for the role (along with I don't know how many other potential "Jakes"), and selected a handful to bring back to meet and read with the director / writers / producers, etc. At the end of that process, they called my managers and offered me the role. To your second question: The single biggest thing that stuck out to me about the role specifically, was the character arc throughout the series. Jake was a seemingly "normal" guy in the beginning, who slowly either descends into madness, or is slowly being taken over by a dark presence. And either way (mad, or dark presence), portraying a character trying to deal with something he can't explain or understand or even get his mind around, and the confusion, frustration and fear of not understanding what was happening to him or when it might happen again next - that was really fascinating to me as an actor. Thanks again and be well. |

Re: SO who wants to interview Jake on these forums?
Quote:
Hi Alan Wake89:Thanks for your questions! Great questions by the way. To the first one - what happened to Jake in the car: I'm assuming you're referring to the end of the last episode? If so, there's several ways I could try to answer that. I guess to really know for sure, we'd have to get into the heads of the incredibly talented writers and creators of the series. I've seen interviews with actors on Lost - where they talk about how they don't even know what is happening or will happen to their characters until the writers reveal it later, and this is the case here also. I personally think it was left intentionally open ended, to force the viewer to discover for themselves what they think happened to Jake, and to create mystery that can only [maybe] be answered in the game. From Jake's perspective, I don't think he himself knew exactly what was happeneing to him. He likely felt it happening, but I don't think he would be able to explain it. I think he was a "less than willing" participant in whatever it was. Now from the Actor's point of view, I don't know for sure any more than you do what happened to Jake at the end, and maybe that is by design. But when I originally read the script, and now watching the series in retrospect, I personally speculate that there are three possibilities: The first and probably most common speculation is that he's being taken over by the dark presence in Bright Falls. A second possibility is that he's out of his meds, and is slipping down a rabbit hole of mental madness or insanity. A third possibility is that when he hit the dear on his way into town, it might have caused severe head trauma, and maybe he wandered into the woods somewhere and is dying, and everything he is experiencing is part of the hallucinatory dying process, in which case none of this ever really happened at all. Oooh...the possibilities! This might be answered in the game, or maybe if they do another set of episodes it will be answered there. To your second question - where is my girlfriend (I assume you are talking about Ellen, not Libby who was my wife): Again, this is pure speculation: If everything that happened to Jake was nothing more than hallucination due to madness or dying, then Libby is probably back at the office of the publication she works at, laughing with the rest of her seemingly crazy co-workers. If, however, Jake is being taken over by the dark presence, then neither we nor Jake know what he did with Ellen, since it all happens during "lost time". I could speculate that in this case, he either killed her, or like the deer - she isn't dead - but maybe has also been "taken" by the dark presence. All pure speculation of course. And again, maybe that will be answered by what we see in the game, or maybe if they make more episodes, it will be answered there. To your third question - Do I know Alan: Storywise - No, I (Jake) do not know Alan personally, although I would imagine being a writer myself, I am aware of who he is. In real life, I (the Actor Christopher), did meet Ilkka Villi (the Actor that Alan is based on), briefly on set - and he's a really great guy! To your fourth question - why was I (jake) in the body bag: This is definitely an unanswered question, and there is seemingly no clue to this in the series at all, so all we can do is speculate. This is such a blatant and forward scene or set of scenes, that I assume it has very distinct meaning - (I don't think there was much of anything that the writers put in the series that didnt have some kind of meaning). So once again - if this is all nothing but a hallucination to Jake - this would be just another part of that. If however, he's being taken over by the dark presence, this has a much stranger implication, which I hope will be answered either during the course of gameplay, or in more episodes of Bright Falls. Thanks again! |

Re: Interview with Jake (post questions here)
Hi Christopher!
Thanks so much for coming on here and chatting. VERY cool of you. First thing I want to say, is AMAZING performance you gave as Jake. You're a very talented actor. BIG fan of your work on this series, and loved the character of Jake. I hope to see much more of you. Speaking of which - PLEASE tell me that there will be more Bright Falls episodes! I loved this series, and like I and others here have said, its better than most of the stuff currently on TV. The only complaints I have is that they were WAY too short, and ended WAY too early. Do you think they will make it into a tv series? Will they make more of these episodes? Can you make that happen? Also, what are you currently working on? What are your favorite TV shows. What are some of your favorite films? Have you played the game Alan Wake yet? What do you think of it? Thanks! Megan |

Re: Interview with Jake (post questions here)
Quote:
Hey SlasherJPC:Thanks for your questions. To your first question, did I have any knowledge of the Alan Wake game story before / during the shooting: Great question. No, and in fact, I don't recall there being much information about the project in general when the original casting breakdowns were sent out. But once I had been offered the role, I was then told that the series would be in support of the release of Alan Wake. So at that point, I started doing as much research on my own as I could about the game. There were trailers that I watched, and websites that had been set up in support of the game that I read, etc. I watched and read everything I could get my hands on. This gave me a fairly good idea of the "world" of the story, and some of the more important facts behind the game story. From this, I knew the basic premise upon which the story, the game, and the games characters were based. Then I got the script for Bright Falls, and even that was kept under wraps until quite late in the process. The script was really well written, and I loved the story! It was very similar in feel to the Alan Wake trailers. Beyond that, I spent time with the Director Phil Van talking about and working out story points, etc. Phil is a very talented director and writer (he co-wrote the story with Mat Bunnell), and I really enjoyed working with him. I don't recall him giving me a whole lot of detail in terms of game story that wasn't publically available (and I'm glad because I want to experience it first hand playing the game). He may have talked about small things that would help me to better understand the world of Bright Falls, but most of our discussion centered around his vision for the series (Bright Falls) itself. We had meetings / sessions in pre-production where we went over the Bright Falls story in detail, and Phil, Matt, and the Artistic Director Nate Able were all present. Matt and Nate are also fantastically talented and really good at what they do. It was a huge pleasure to work with people of their caliber. Those sessions really helped solidify the series concept for me. But again, our conversations during those sessions really centered around their vision for the Bright Falls Series. I am sure that, since they were responsible for creating this series, that they probably all had a much more detailed knowledge of the game story. But as for myself, beyond what was publically available about the game, I didnt have any additional detailed knowledge of the game story itself. To your second question - how it felt partaking in a video game prequel: Well, for any normal project, this would have had no bearing. But given that AW is one of the most hotly anticipated games to hit the market in some time - that really added another dimension of excitement to the whole thing - knowing that the series we were creating would be helping to set up the world that the game takes place in. Outside of that, in terms of pre-production, preparation for the role, and the actual filming of the series, it was very much like any other film I've done. The locations were amazing. I'd never been to the pacific northwest, so that was an amazing experience in and of itself. Timberline lodge (where we shot Dr. Hartman's Office) was amazing, and seeing 10 foot (or more) snow drifts outside was equally amazing! Thanks again.

Hello Chris(topher)!
Great job with the series! Very cool of you to take the time to answer some questions! If you get to it, I would like to know what your favorite scene was to shoot and why? Also, which on-screen character did you spend the most time with off the camera? And last, do you know if Bright Falls will have any other forms of release (Blu-ray, DVD)? Thank you for your time! Re: Interview with Jake (post questions here)
Quote:
Hi there WakeLestat360: Thanks so much for your kind words - I really appreciate it, and Im glad you enjoyed the series! As for your question: Well, the director had given me a few references for situational tone and texture, and I had a few of my own, but I didn't really have a specific person or performance that I drew on for the character of Jake. Instead I took each situation that Jake found himself in, and really tried to think about how I might feel or react in real life if I were presented with those same circumstances. For situations that were more extreme, where possible I tried to put myself through exercises that might mimic those situations in terms of the way they would make me feel. I'll give you one example: To really understand what Jake might feel like waking up in the woods in the middle of the night, I actually went out to some wooded areas along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu in the middle of the night one night, and just walked out quite far into the woods barefoot in only jeans and a t-shirt, and just sat out there for over an hour, by myself. It gets pretty creepy in the woods at night when you're by yourself, especially when it's pitch black, and every time a twig snaps or branches blow in the wind, it gets even creepier. You hear noises, but you can't see whats around you in the dark. You rationalize that it's probably just harmless nocturnal animals, but your mind begins to play tricks on you, and you begin to wonder if whatever it is you hear, might make you it's next meal. Every time I felt something crawl up my feet or legs, and it was too dark to see what it was, it got even a little scarier. The darkness and disorientation really starts to get to you after a while. I made it for just over an hour before I'd finally had enough. But I was really able to draw on that experience and the fear it generated, during the shoot. I could go back and revisit that in my mind when shooting scenes that might generate the same type of fear in Jake. Thanks again for your question, and for your kind compliments. Be well,

Re: Interview with Jake (post questions here)
Quote:
Hi there Elbatish - thanks for your questions - To the first one - what happened to Jake's Girlfriend, Ellen? We don't know for sure. It all depends on your interpretation of what happened to Jake. If for example all of the Bright Falls series was nothing more than a hallucination in Jake's head, then nothing happened to Ellen. BUT...if Jake has been taken by the dark presence, well, then it's anybody's guess what has happened to Ellen. Jake might have killed her. He might have taken her into the woods to join the dark presence. The only thing that might "shed some light" on that (pun intended) is playing the game. I don't know what ultimately happens to people when they get taken by the dark presence. Are they gone forever? Are they able to come back? I hope to know more when my copy of the game arrives tomorrow. From what we know in these 6 short episodes, if indeed Jake has been taken over by the dark presence during his "missing time episodes", it doesnt seem that he is able to counter the dark presence when he is under it's control. And yet he is able to come out of it after these episodes. So I have probably created more questions rather than answering yours. Ultimately, I'd like to think that Jake will be able to fight off the darkness and win back control over himself, and save Ellen from it as well. But we may never know. There may be clues that help answer your questions in the game itself, and if there are ever any more Bright Falls episodes made, maybe Jake and Ellen's stories will continue on and we'll find out. Thanks for watching the series, and for your questions. I hope you really enjoy Alan Wake! |

Thanks Slasherjpc - it's my pleasure, and I'm glad to be a part of such a great project. Thanks for your support. To your question: Storywise - I don't think we shot any story elements that didnt make it into the final cut. To the best of my knowledge we pretty much stuck to the script, and all of those story points ended up in the series. There may have been a few small things here and there that were eliminated in the cut simply because in the end they werent necessary or crucial to the storyline, but it was a very efficient shoot to be sure, and most everything that we shot was ultimately used. Re: Interview with Jake (post questions here)
Quote:
Hey Sebastian - thanks for your questions - here are my answers:
Question 1: Like what slasherjpc and Bryan108 asked, do you play video games? And if so are you going to play Alan Wake?
Question 2: Did you have any control over the story? Question 3: Did you know about Alan Wake before being cast for Bright Falls? Question 4: If Remedy wanted you to be a voice actor for the next Alan Wake game would you do it? Question 5: What consoles do you own (if any)? Question 6: Have they let you play the game when doing Bright Falls? 1. I do play video games, though I am not likely the expert that many of you on this forum are. I've played several FPS games, but I have to say that Alan Wake is right up my alley, and I'm not just saying that because I worked on Bright Falls. I love 3rd person action games that sit within the psychological thriller genre, and I love mysteries that take a lot of work to unravel, while keeping your heart pounding and the adrenaline pumping. I LOVE the fact that this game is played in an episodic format, and that clues to what is happening are slowly revealed throughout the course of gameplay. I love that the game unfolds just like the story in a good gripping thriller book would. I am definitely going to play this game - ABSOLUTELY. I got home just 15 minutes ago, to find my copy waiting in front of my door. I won't be getting to bed early tonight! 2. No, I didnt have any control over the story, but that would have been completely unnecessary, because Mat Bunnell and Phillip Van are brilliant writers. I assume their mandate from the beginning was to create a story that would stand on it's own, but also serve to introduce us to Bright Falls, and to the world within which this game takes place, and to possibly introduce some gameplay elements to the viewer also. Honestly, when things are written as well as this series was, I really don't want to change anything about it anyway. Part of my job as an actor is to honor the writers work, and especially when it is really great work like this was, you want to honor that as much as possible. 3. No, I did not know about Alan Wake before being cast in Bright Falls. In fact, to my recollection, there wasnt even any information revealed about the game during the casting process. I think it was only after I was cast that I became aware of Alan Wake. And that says nothing really, because I am so busy most of the time with projects that I am simply not up to date on what is in development elsewhere. I'm a big Remedy fan, and Max Payne fan, so the fact that I wasnt aware of Alan Wake has more to do with me not keeping up on projects in development than anything else. 4. Absolutely, in a heartbeat. Like the writers & creators of the Bright Falls series, the group at Remedy is a brilliant and very talented group of people. I'd love the opportunity to help people like that bring their vision to life. 5. XBOX 360 and Wii. 6. Nope. I literally just got my copy tonight! Speaking of which...this is a great place to sign off for tonight, so I can go start playing the game! Thanks again Sebastian for your questions! To everyone else - I will be back tomorrow at some point to continue answering questions. I will eventually get to every last question. I appreciate everyone's interest and support. I am off to play Alan Wake!

Megan Regarding the future of Bright Falls: I'm glad that you enjoyed the series so much. I think the viewer response has even caught me by surprise a little, but I am really grateful that people have responded so positively. I haven't heard anything about more episodes being made. There are a lot of questions surrounding that. From a business perspective, I think the original concept behind BF was to create interest in the game, and so the payoff would come in the form of game sales. Financially, it probably wouldnt make sense to create more episodes unless they had a way to profit from it. Having said that, where there is viewer demand and a fan base, corporate suits will usually listen. For Msft or Rmdy to get behind it, it would probably coincide with another AW release. I've heard talk that there will be an AW2, which is, I'm guessing, a year or two or three down the road. Maybe at that time they will do another round of episodes. In the meantime, if fans of the series are really vocal about it, somebody somewhere at one of the TV networks or cable channels might get wind of it and decide to make something with a similar feel and storyline. Like Mat Bunnell said in his interview with Machinima - if fans of the series are vocal about it, and keep demanding it, then something could get done. But the key is demand and a strong fan base. Here's to hoping! To your second question - what am I currently working on: I executive produced and starred in a film that was shot in the month of January - just before we shot Bright Falls. It's called "On The Outside". I played the lead character in that film - an Ex-Con who winds up right back in prison less than 24 hours after his release, all because of trying to save his brother from going down the same path he'd traveled, and due to events that were out of his control. The film is currently in post production, and we are gearing up for a large festival run. It's a gripping story, and I have high hopes for the film. I am also a singer/songwriter, and am currently in the studio recording a song for the film, which will play when the end credits roll. In addition, I am also a writer, and am near completion on a screenplay that is already beginning to generate a lot of interest. It's a feature film, in the "Dark Dramedy" genre....a comedy / drama with a lot of dark humor. And there are a couple of scripts behind that one, one that I am co-writing with a writing partner of mine, and another that I am writing myself (which is - big surprise - a psychological thriller). So my hands are pretty full at the moment. Also, if you wish, you can subscribe to my email list for updates by going to my website www.ChristopherForsyth.com, and click on the "Join Email List" at the bottom of the page. Favorite TV Shows: Hmmm...thats a hard one. I don't watch a ton of TV, but off the top of my head the shows that I like the most are: Lost, Dexter, Mad Men, Modern Family, and once in a while 2 1/2 Men - and I used to watch 6 Feet Under when it was on. Favorite Films: That's next to impossible to answer. I watch films constantly - I'm a netflix junkie. And I love films in a lot of different genre's, so it's impossible to list "favorite" films. I like a great story that captivates and moves me. I guess some that stick out in my mind at the moment (and this would change 5 minutes from now) are: Hotel Rwanda, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Boogie Nights, Capote, A Beautiful Mind, Half Nelson, Children Of Men, Snatch, The Big Lebowski, Little Children, No Country For Old Men, The painted Veil, Gangs Of New York, There Will Be Blood, Fight Club, Magnolia, Reservoir Dogs, I Am Sam, Gone Baby Gone, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Atonement, Good Will Hunting, Silence Of The Lambs, Awakenings, Forrest Gump, The Green Mile, Cape Fear, Se7en, My Left Foot, Benny and Joon, Scent of a Woman, Hard Eight, 25th Hour, The Dead Girl, Let The Right One In, American History X, Gran Torino, The Hangover, 40 yr old Virgin, American Pie, The Italian Job, It Might Get Loud - Doc, The Cove - Doc, King Of Kong - Doc, Oh Brother Where Art Thou, Walk The Line, Ratatouille, Kung Fu Panda, Iron Man 1 & 2, Napoleon Dynamite, Life as a House, Rainman, The Yards, We Own The Night, American Beauty, The Universe - series, District 9, Up, Titanic, I could literally go on forever. Have I played Alan Wake yet: I just started the game last night. I only made it through the first episode - but I LOVE it. Absolutely LOVE it. I really didnt want to put it down, but I knew if I continued to play, I'd never get up this morning on time. I'd say more, but I don't know how to use SPOILER tags! Thanks again Megan for your kind words and your questions!

Thanks Gbraga! I really appreciate the kind comments. I had a great deal of fun making Bright Falls, and it thrills me to hear that people loved the series so much and connected with the character of Jake so well. Thanks again - and have fun with Alan Wake!
Thank you very much to coming here and talking to us! It's very nice of you.
Also, congratulations for your work with Bright Falls, Jake was a really good character, and I think most of the fans are really willing to see some references about Jake and the series in general in the upcoming DLCs and/or the possible sequel. No questions though, just posted to say that

Re: Interview with Jake (post questions here)
Once you get father into the game Chris, I'd love to know more thoughts on how well you feel the style and intrigue of Bright Falls matched with the games setting and theme.
Also the scene where you watch the tape recorded of yourself was absolutely chilling. Did you actually get to smash up a bunch of stuff yourself for that part or did they use a stunt person? And great acting as you stared at the screen in horror at what you had done. My favorite scene in the entire show. Still gives me goosebumps with your reaction, the horrifying sounds from the tv. "I wish you were crazy...but your not crazy!!!" |
