What is the best flashlight? How many different kinds are there? Do they get progressively better? It would seem logical to me that you should switch anytime a new flashlight is offered but can I assume that each new light source is an upgrade?

The flashlights become better as you go through the game, with about 4 or 5 levels of intensity. It's just general game design that as the enemy strength and difficulty increases, the developers provide with more firepower to combat the increasing threat.
When each flashlight is bigger and brighter, there is no sense in downgrading at all.

Heavy Duty Lantern.

There are 4 types of flashlight, the normal flashlight, heavy duty flashlight, lantern and the heavy duty lantern.

I think the lantern destroys the taken shields quicker but I can't say for sure.

Thanks everyone! I think I read somewhere a rating with the timing of each one in regards to time before the light runs out and time it takes to recharge but I can't remember what article I was reading. But people's replies to this post makes sense. I don't really need to know how many seconds each one lasts. @hellsing I wish Allan could pick up & use the power company's lamps.
