What this mod does:

It's a settings profile for FXAA Post Process Injector, made famous by use in Skyrim. In my opinion, it enhances the atmosphere by making nights darker, and making your flashlight stand out.

-Desaturation
-Extra Anti-Aliasing
-Bloom
-Light Sharpening
-Darker Nights and Brighter Lights

Installation:

Extract files from .zip file and put in your Alan Wake root folder.

This is where your Alan Wake root executable is, not the shortcut on your desktop. Usually it should be something like this

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Alan Wake

Does it improve/not change / Worsen the performance of the game? Is the main question here (Or does it blend?).

Also nice work.

I didn't get much of a frame rate drop at all. I'd say, depending on your set up, you can expect a 3-5fps drop.

Put up a new video demonstrating the mod. The lag is due to fraps and the performance hit was only about 3-5fps for me with fraps off.

though doesn't that kill some other shader effects thinking about the dark presence would come less intensive if even more darkened ?

For me it was enough to just lower brightness in the game to make it darker. In default it is a little too bright.

It does what I said it does in the description. It isn't just a drop in brightness. It adds bloom, desaturates it, adds anti aliasing. If you just lowered the brightness, it would make everything darker, this makes things look more realistic by making what should be dark, dark, and keeping the light parts light, while adding bloom. It brings out the lighting more. If you just turned the brightness down, it wouldn't change the balance. There's cleary a difference in the screenshots.

Yes actually. I'm a sound designer, and if I can get the whole file format conversion thing down, you can expect a whole lot of sound mods. I want to start out by redoing all of the weapon sounds first. Then I'm going to ask around some forums around the web, including this one, and get people's feedback about what can be altered or improved.

I'll probably do something like I did for Skyrim here:

Well , i also tried " modding" AW.
This time with a modified ENB config.
Results are imo good , but it takes a lot of horsepower of the pc (a loss of 10fps on my laptop and on my friends monster-pc " only about 6fps).

Results are blacker/darker shadows , more vibrant saturated colors, more focused lighting and a little added bloom.

Looks good. I'm working on an ENB + FXAA profile right now. I know I said I don't like enb, but I need something to make days bright and nights dark, which enb allows.

Here's a preview of version two. I'm trying to make it so your flashlight helps you out more than just as a weapon. You'll actually need it to see now. Makes combat much harder.

Re: PC Mod - Enhanced Nightmare (FXAA Injector Profile)

I think this is really interesting, because in our user testing it quickly became extremely obvious that most people get tired of "real" darkness extremely quickly -- they get lost, they can't see the enemies well so they're constantly getting ambushed, and because our environments are pretty big, just getting around takes forever. That's why we opted for a more "cinematic" darkness for a very good reason. I think that was absolutely the right (and well-informed) decision for us, but I know that there are people who really enjoy that sort of thing. I'd be very interested in hearing about the experiences of people who actually play through the entire game and the DLCs with version 2, seen above -- whether you got frustrated by it or tired of it, or if you felt it added to the overall experience, or however you feel about it. Ideally, I'd love to hear from someone who actually plays the game for the first time with the version 2 level of darkness on! =)

As I said, I'll stand by our original decision, but I've got a great deal of professional curiosity about this sort of thing, so once you guys try it, please post about it!

Hi there from Serbia i am playing Alan Wake for the first time on mine laptop with this mode.Well, for me it adds a great amount of atmosphere and intense compared to original version(i only played episode 1 with original settings).Hovewer it raises a bar of difficulity a little bit .But,i love challenges and certainly this brings up a diffrent game.Joined with excellent storytelling i definitevly recommand this mode .I wouldnt think that i could play with preview version 2.In your next AW game i think that it is good option to put a new "cinema" or some kind of mode enthusiastics will like it for sure. Thats it and keep with good work
P.S Sry for bad english i know only serbian and russian.Ahh yes and bosnian, montenegrian, croatian and macedonian

On all those screens, contrast is too pronounced & not realistic, really, it's more similar to a cartoon
The Only thing, people forget to check everytime (include, seeing the pic, the author of the thread & CP69 or maybe their game is not @ max i dont know) , is the brightness option. Because (in my case) by default, brightness is FAR to high

But it's only my PoV

default brightness on my laptop ONLY looks as bright in your (default) pics when shadow is set to low.

When set to highest the screen is darker , but still too bright though.

Nice mod

You can tweak it yourself btw, open the injFX_Shaders folder, then open injFxaaSettings.h with notepad. For example if you think it's too dark find this line:

#define Gamma

and change it from 1.15 to maybe 1.05

I included a tool that lets you tweak it without doing that. It works much faster. It's called FXAA tool.

This is what I did, lowered the brightness and it made a nice difference imo. Those mods look like someone has got the colour setting and cranked it right up. Looks rubbish imo

The pics from CP69 also look to me like they have to much colour, worse then your pics by a mile.

Re: PC Mod - Enhanced Nightmare (FXAA Injector Profile)

I had a hard enough time on the lighthouse run in The Writer after I turned the brightness right up, I found it too ridiculous with the brightness I had been using. Using this mod would only make that section even more frustrating than it is now. IMO that bit of the second DLC was the only bad level design in the whole of the Alan Wake experience and nearly sullied my enjoyment of the game.
