I've only got a 3rd gen iPod touch and my Android phone is no where near compatible... balls.

At least I've already played the game a zillion times on my desktop PC lol still definitely curious to see how it runs on iOS or Android that and it's a pretty convenient system... just download, install, press on the icon and boom! game launched, no CD required, no need to worry about a mess of folders and files or whichever imprints it's self in the registry, no worrying about the latest graphic drivers or sound patches.

Just as long as your firmware is up to date and you have the compatible device you're good to go i just find that awesome. Instant Max Payne gratification.

Incredible huh? I'm curious to see if Rockstar manages to get Max Payne 2 running on those devices as well. You gotcha HD remakes right there!

Seriously, Max Payne 2 only required a 32MB vid-card and a 800mhz processor. The mobile devices of this generation surpass that by far!

Great news, but how in the name of beelzebub are they going to make this work on iOS controls?

What is the Next Big Thing?
Stay tuned...

I can't wait for this.

@Morry - They've been similar 3rd person shooters which have had great controls. Takes a while to get used to, but once you do it's smooth sailin' from there.

These days, just about everybody has more computing power in their pocket than the entire project that put men on the moon ever did. We tend to take it for granted.

We are in the future, and it's pretty awesome.

Hopefully it won't suffer the same case of GTA3 on iOS. It's impressive it can be run there, but it doesn't run it too well. Still, if this works, might as well release Max Payne 2.

Apparently my 3G 32GB iPod Touch model IS supported!

Just bought it and it's downloading now, of course it'll take 80 minutes... will edit this post when i get it up and running.. really hope it works or i'll be miffed lol!

Edit: Yep, it works! a bit sluggish in spots seems to only choke in big open environments and when there's a lot of guys on screen, narrow areas and low activity spots aren't bad. Looks very edgy but that's probably because of my device and it being the most minimal requirement.

I can already see one problem with the weapon selection menu and how you access that, been having a lot of trouble because that's also the iPhone's drop down menu location so there's definitely some interference, the health censor area for taking painkillers isn't too responsive.

Again it may be an entirely different experience for someone else with a higher end product but that's what i got out of it and not much else that i have a problem with. Another thing to note, while i was doing the tutorial using the Sniper rifle i noticed that after i had killed the last guy and the bullet cam came up well there was no bullet there, that graphic was missing... could be my device again though.

Downloading! Will review later today and edit this post..

Here it is. Wrote this in a blast so it might not be my best work.

Max Payne Mobile Review
During the wait for the release of the highly anticipated Max Payne 3, it was revealed that Rockstar Games and War Drum Studios were collaborating on a port of the original Max Payne game for mobile devices. The first chapter of the Max Payne franchise found its way to the Apple AppStore on Thursday April 12 2012, and would later be released for Android devices as well.

For this review, the game was played on a New iPad (3rd gen).

That Old Familiar Feeling
Max Payne Mobile weighs around 1,1 Gigabytes. That’s around 200MB more than a full PC installation. The game promises to bring you the full PC experience along with updated graphics, high resolution textures, social club integration and customizable touch controls. At this moment, the game supports the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch (4th generation), iPad, iPad 2 and the new iPad.

An Offer You Can’t Refuse
The game costs around €2,39/$2,99, a fair deal if you ask me.

I was in a iPad game? Funny as hell, it was the most horrible thing I could think of..
Max Payne Mobile marks the second time Rockstar Games and War Drum studios teamed up to port a game to mobile devices. Their first collaboration was on Grand Theft Auto 3 Mobile, to celebrate the game its tenth anniversary. While playing that game, the touch controls and especially the aiming got me quite frustrated. While it did work, it never delivered a solid and fun experience as the game did on my trusty Playstation 2. While I could see one mastering the controls and have a good time, It didn’t took long for me to realize I’d better cherish those old memories and delete this game. Since Max Payne is also a third person shooter, I feared the game would have the same issues.

But I feared wrong! While the controls do need some getting used to, playing Max Payne on my iPad actually felt natural. You can adjust the aiming to your liking (free aim, soft/hard lock) and the game even allows you to change the position of the controls. If you switched to hard lock like me, you’ll notice the game becomes easier and even enables you to kill baddies without Max’s signature bullet time ability. While this removes the fun a bit, it does familiarize you with the controls for later levels. The only thing missing is the crouch function, but who needs that?

Nothing To Lose
Bullet time itself has been “updated” as well. When entering bullet time, the screen will be immersed in a grey/blue haze. Much like the orange/brown tint in Max Payne 2. Unfortunately all the gun sounds still seem to play in real time during Bullet time. Bullet time is triggered with the press of a button. When moving you’ll preform a shootdodge while standing still enables you to walk in slowmotion.

The game works just as you would expect it to work. Solid. However, I did encounter a bug or two. The weapon selection is probably the worst element you’ll have to deal with. To trigger the selection screen you’ll have to push an icon at the exact same spot the Notification screen is triggered. In addition the weapon icons are way too small and requires you to push a few times until the correct weapon is in your hands.

Graphic-wise, the game looks okay. While sharp (there’re no jaggy edges on my New iPad) the textures look fine but not high resolution at all. Do not expect a High Definition remake.

The integration with Rockstar’s social club provides you with statistics, 41 achievements to collect and “cheats”. Unfortunately not the cheats you’re thinking of, simply only an option to select a level of choice. Might be addressed in future updates.

I Released My Finger From The Trigger..
For newcomers and die-hard fans, Max Payne Mobile is a nice addition. Something to get warmed up before the release of Max Payne 3. If you can train yourself in the controls, which are different but not bad at all, you’ll have a great time with this game.

Works pretty straight forward, there's a button you press while you're moving to shootdodge in whichever direction you're moving and you press the same button while standing still to activate bullet time. Press once again while standing still to turn it off.

Also as i was remembering the other actions and controls from the PC game, I think they completely eliminated the crouch function from this mobile version? not that it was really of much use.

Controls are a little fiddly and I don't like that you can't aim and shoot at the same time that easy.

Aside from those things (which after time you can get used to) it's frickin' Max Payne running on a little mobile device! The fact I can now carry the game around and play it at any time is just incredible.

It's paaaayne

ADM and I have been trying (and failing) to get mods to run on it.

At a glance, it looks like the game uses the same database as the original (with minor changes), so I can't see why it wouldn't work; but we just can't get the mod files to launch.

Override the original files and compile as a new app?

It might work (I don't have a smartphone so I can't try unpacking the files with rasmaker), but you couldn't redistribute it legally.

Another bug that I've encountered on my "technically unsupported but supported" device is that you can't load a saved game after you've died. No matter what i do the camera just keeps rotating around my corpse, I've tried every combination of tapping and there's definitely no prompt that pops up.

This leads me to closing the app as well as the background process and restarting the app.
