From 3 to 42 laps per race??!

I'm playing this wonderful game from some days, I've always started races with 3 laps but yesterday I selected a new race and I had to race for 42 laps, today with another race there are already 42 laps. Why? I see that there is no way to change the numbers of laps but... is it normal that from 3 laps now with the new races I have to drive for 42?!!
Could someone help me?

The 42 lap races are Marathon challenges. Simply select another level that doesn't say Marathon to race ~3 laps.
