NmICH, what is your computer setup? Do you have an SSD? Windows 7?

Oops,

I faced same error.

Someone said non-English window admin account may cause this error so I changed my window 7 account into English but nothing happened.

It seems Alan Wake has pretty critical problems that do not allow us to play it. I can't even see the Lemedy's logo yet...

Re: File IO failure

Ah....I finally can run the Alan Wake.

Follow these steps.

Create another window account in your window setting menu.
Account name should be English.
And re-login your desktop with this account -> Run Steam -> Click damn Alan -> See the game's running.

My account and Windows is all English so this does nothing for me.

I made a second account, logged into it and then the game worked fine. I have no idea why.

Thanks for posting up the workaround, that will help us to isolate the cause of the problem.

I use non default place for "My documents".

This sounds like a plausible reason (although I haven't checked with Markus if he already has found the source of this fault).

If you are experiencing this problem, can you please report whether you have relocated your My Documents folder to a non-default location ?

I'm having this same error and DO use a non-standard location for my "My Documents" folder. Also I'm on Windows 7

"My Documents" location is: D:\Dokumenty\

PS. The game is excellent, just a pity that there is no version for PlayStation 3.

Re: File IO failure

For my regular user account, My Documents is C:\Users\<user>\Local Settings\Documents\

On the new user where it worked, it wrote the directory in C:\Users\<user>\Documents\Remedy\AlanWake, which is that user's My Documents folder. I'm curious why my My Documents is under Local Settings but meh. I've had this Windows 7 install since it first came out.

I have this error, too.

Windows 7 64-bit with a redirected "My Documents"

I don't think the game likes the UNC path to My Documents. If change the registry to point the documents to any local folder (i.e. C:\temp) then the game launches.

If you have this problem, try editing the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Set the value to c:\temp or similar.
