  • PC Freeze / Manual Reboot

    PC Specs:
    Windows 7/64-bit
    Gigabyte P55A-UD4P (most recent Bios)
    i7-860 @ 2.8 (stock)
    8gb G.skill Sniper Ram (9-9-9-24)
Sapphire 7850 OC (down-clocked to reference clocks) - CCC 12.3
    Antec Earthwatts 650W
Using Headphones attached to monitor jack.

-All CCC settings set to application controlled, with exception of tessellation set to AMD optimized.
    -In game settings: 1920 x 1080, 2 x AA, 16 x AF, SSAO = off, the rest on high.

-Purchased game from / latest version
-I played for 1.5 hours no problems.
***-Then video freeze with a low humming/buzzing noise***
    -Alt-tab or Ctrl-alt-del didn't help.
    -Had to hard reboot computer.

I have read the release notes for CCC 12.4 and it makes no mention of Alan Wake. It also mentions 'Known Issues' under Windows 7 with regards to the "Catalyst Control Center may experience random crashes in specific configurations." Therefore, I'm very hesitant to try 12.4.

    Any suggestions would be great.
If it helps, no issues in other games including Serious Sam 3, Path of Exile, Diablo 3 Beta, Mount/Blade: Warband

P.S. Great game by the way, it's a real beauty.

    Re: Freeze / Manual Reboot

A month and a half has passed since I asked my question.
I'll try again, and this time I expect a response.

I have installed/cleanly CCC 12.4; I played for 15 minutes and got a light gray screen freeze up.
    I couldn't alt-tab, nor ctrl-alt-del. I had to hard reset computer.

    Any suggestions?

I'd like to get back to this game before old age sets in.

      Perhaps try running dxdiag tool:

Post the results up here so that someone can look in to it.

I've attached the DxDiag file for your viewing pleasure.
Edit: It should be noted that I do have ATI's CCC 12.4 installed, even though CCC didn't correctly list the version number.
This is a known issue for ATI. Driver is correct, identification is not. Thought I'd mention that to eliminate any queries regarding version.

This sounds like an overheating or power supply issue. I haven't heard of probs with cat 12.4, but it's possible -- the 7800 chip is still reasonably new and drivers may be less mature (and my home 7850 crashes with Civ V similarly hard if I watch a video while I play windowed...) ... A software bug can't really cause a full system crash on Win7.

I haven't managed to track my problem yet though, these are really hard to identify positively. Downclocking the graphics card could be something to try, as well as monitoring temps.
