  • Game to Movie Conversions: What's your fav & do you think Alan Wake could make it?

Okay... everyone knows Game to Movie conversions are generally very very bad. Generally making a tonne of money for very little effort or plummetting and doing absolutel crap at the box office because everyone expects them to be crap. Soo.... let's discuss whether or not the "premise" (as we don't know enough yet so it's all speculation) of Alan Wake would make for a good, if not the no. 1, game to movie conversion.

    So... what to do:

    1. State your favourite #1, or couple of game to movie conversions
    2. State your least favourite game to movie conversions
    3. Game you most wish was a movie but isn't yet (not inc. AW)
    4. Do you think AW would make a good game to movie conversion? Why/why not
    5. State any other general feelings you have to this terrible genre of the film industry.

    I'll start us off:

    1. Favourites: Mortal Kombat, Doom, Resident Evil (I know i'm i sucker for Milla Jokovich despite the hate for this movie series)

    2. Least favourites: Street Fighter, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, any of the Tomb Raider's

    3. American McGee's Alice / Vampire:TMB

    4. Yes it probably could. BUT if it's the whole psychological thriller, then people that have played the game and know the twists would probably already have the movie ruined for them. Although that's like all game-to-movie conversions... hence the general crappiness.

    5. The problem I find with most game-to-movie conversions is everyone is buff, hot, overly-stereotyped and completely 1-dimensional in their character sets. From their first to their last line they never ever ever change, and twists are so predictable, and scares are so weak, that the entire movie quality rests on gore, nudity, cheap scares, and lame jokes.

Although what I find even funnier is that the movie to game genre is even worse of an offender.

Re: Game to Movie Conversions: What's your fav & do you think Alan Wake could make it

    1. tomb raider, mortal kombat
    2. doom, max payne
    3. Assassins Creed, (but its inspired by book of V. Bartol - Alamut, so Alamut is better choice an more real) , Prince of Persia
    4. It Wouldnt, because if there will be very bad writer of screen story and give that screenplay to worse director and it will mixed with worst actors... no thank you, better play game again.
    5. depends on the ability of writer, director and actors, if someone has no feelings for atmosphere, camera and good story, than its all crap - like last based on games films

      1. tomb raider
      2. super mario bros (didn't reflect on the game itself much, but i liked the movie as a whole.)
      3. Worms! (lol), Die Hard Vendetta - that'd b a proper die hard film, unlike 4th movie; bag guys weren't german, no blood, no swearing. Sorry, i grew up with the Die Hard trilogy, and #4 murdered it for me.
      4. Same as Vlado. Some things are meant to stay as a game.
      5. As long as it's got the same feel to it as the game has, go for it.

        1. Favourite: Silent Hill

        2. Worst: Resident Evil

        3. Alan Wake [obviously] -- Halo...

        4. I think so, with Remedy's supervision, of course -- and yet, I need to know more about the final product of Alan Wake, before I can completely seriously answer this question...

        5. Keep going, and you might just prevail -- look what happened to comic books - to films at first! Awful...and then it started to get better...

In the right hands God of War could be all kinds of kick ass. It's going to get done one day, hopefully it will actually be good.

Hopefully, a better director than Ratner will attach himself to it...now that it's back on the market.

I put lots of hope into Bioshock movie (year 2010 if everything goes according to the plan). But yeah... the poor record of game-to-movie conversions scares me...

Either the mediums are incompatible or just the games have the upper hand in terms of impression creation.

If you listen to the developers bonuses on the God of War disks, they said they went thru tons of movies looking for the most brutal and over the top violent stuff they could find and it was ALL too tame for God of War. Frankly I have to agree and its one of the things that made that a good game.

Two points tho. If companies like Rockstar get in such hot water over games like Bully (which was also an excellent game and no where near as bad as the censors made it out to be, yes GOW was in hot water too, not coffee, just water), imagine a movie company trying to emulate the beyond extreme graphic brutality in the game. If it did make it, absolutely no less than an R rating, which is usually the mark of death for game to movie conversions, however being that it would have to be more excessively brutal than anything seen before, it might even get a flat out X rating.

Still love to see a GOW movie tho.

              ---

2nd point - Gone are the days that we have to fill in the blanks in video games with our own imagination. Do you remember picking up a Nintendo controller and playing the original Legend of Zelda for the very first time? Rows of trees became lush and beautiful forests, and tiled brown sprites transformed into majestic mountains. That was back in the day when the technology hindered top quality story telling in video games. And those days are long gone. So far gone in fact that TV stations are complaining that people would rather play WoW than watch another rerun of Archie Bunker. Hmm, I wonder why. Video Games have evolved, and matured into their own medium. They are capable of producing cinema quality graphics in real time as well as having the professional voice acting, and story telling capacity of a full series of full length motion pictures. A normal single player game takes much longer than 2 hours to finish, so its like having several movies all strung together seamlessly and with the same quality as a summer blockbuster, and youre interacting with it all.

In the next 100 years, movies and television as we know them today will probably die completely, along with print media. Games will survive because they are the next technological generation to movies and film. The biggest name directors and actors wont be auditioning for movies, they will be applying at Valve, Rockstar, and the other biggest titles in the game industry for a chance to be involved in the next Ben Hur of video games where players control their actions. Both will evolve, but eventually games will win out over the static non interactive media.

The point of this is that the games have gotten to the point where they are nearly perfect as is and dont need to have a film based counterpart.

Re: Game to Movie Conversions: What's your fav & do you think Alan Wake could make it

They made a new Street Fighter film? Were they on drugs?

Part of the problem (besides the obvious ones) is that they're picking the wrong kind of games to adapt to the big screen (and vice versa for film to game adaptations). Fighting games are a dreadful choice. I don't care how intricate the back stories are, there's no way games like Street Fighter, Tekken, Dead or Alive, and MK should be adapted into live action films. The end result is almost always like a porno flick with fighting. Mortal Kombat only got away with it because the basic premise is just "Enter the Dragon" with a supernatural twist to it.

Don't even get me started on Pac-Man again.

As for Alan Wake, isn't the story supposed to take the structure of a TV series? I don't think that would translate to the big screen at all. But if they insist on doing it, then perhaps the best approach is to do it like the Twin Peaks film -- use the film format as an opportunity to expand the story and add to the game's universe; not retell or reimagine it.

Re: Game to Movie Conversions: What's your fav & do you think Alan Wake could make it

Personally, I think Tetris would make an excellent movie!

                  Seriously though;
1: Favourite: None. Ah...probably Hitman if I had to choose with a gun to my head.
                  2: Worst: All
3: Most wanted adaptation: Spore(LOL, just kidding)...probably Assassin's Creed, or...a decent, CG Tekken film.
4: Alan Wake has what it takes to make a good, if not great game-to-movie adaptation. Hell, many games have what it takes...but directors and producers usually f**k that up!
5: I don't know why some producers and directors just take it upon themselves to actually be independent and actually play the friggin game that they're converting to film.

Yall saw Max Payne? Honestly, that show was utter garbage! No one, not even the friggin script writers or cast played the game thoroughly. They need to do that to bring certain games the justice they deserve. Of course, you don't want to make an exact copy of a hit game, then, it would just be like watching someone else play the game instead of you...but producers and directors need to study what made the game a hit in the 1st place and implement at least some of those elements into the film.

Taking Max Payne as an example, some elements that were not implemented into the game were, the full noir environment, the immersing dialog, the sick, metphorical & melacholy narration of Mr. Payne...etc...it friggin pisses me off!

I can't really follow the format offered here, as I've not seen a video game movie I really like. Yeah, I liked Resident Evil, but only after I completely let go of the fact that it was a game before it was a movie.

I want to see Dues Ex and Legacy of Kain as movies. Unfortunately, unless by some stroke of retarded genius they kept to the script of the games, I would have to personally disfigure the staff involved in the movie making process. But, at least then you all could say you knew that guy they are carting of to jail and that he frequented these forums before the horrible and bloody event. You may even support me, and I think that would be enough to get me through.

                        This is getting rediculous now:

                        Minesweeper the movie

You know, now that I've been thinking on it, I bet it's possible (given enough signatures) to launch a lawsuit and sue movie companies to stop making crap game crossovers.

I'm sure we could drum up all sorts of charges and systems to prevent them.

Personally I can't understand why people are so aggressive against movie adaptions.

                              Stop whining.

If they really want to do them movies, let them.

                              It's not off from anyone.
