    Music Gigs, Festivals, and Concerts

Festival season is right around the corner, so in a similar fashion to the "what are you listening to right now?" threads, what concerts have you seen recently or are about to see?

I was going to see a New Orleans Brass band tonight, called The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, but unfortunately they've had to cancel last minute -- their flight got delayed. Bummer.

So the last person I saw live was a guy called Chris Stout - about a month ago. He's a pretty interesting fiddle player who combines traditional Scottish tunes with Jazz and classical arrangements (as well as a healthy dose of world music for good measure). Strange to see a lineup of Fiddle, Rabcca (Brazilian fiddle), Harp, Piano, Guitar, and Saxophone, but it sounded amazing.

Anyway, who have you seen recently? Anyone going to a summer music festival this year?

Festival wise I'll just be on two free mini festivals here in belgium and on the Cactus Festival. Also very small but some decent bands (65daysofstatic, mono, Gutter Twins,...).

Got to see Mastodon play about a month or so ago. They have to be one of the most consistently solid bands of the past decade (studio & live), metal or otherwise. Red Fang was the opener and they killed it too, another awesome Relapse band on the rise.

Very cool. My brother is always listening to his music. He was in Australia a few months ago.

Saw joe bonamassa saturday night. This guy's solos are INSANE...especially the acoustic "Woke up dreaming". My mind is still blown. Best guitarist I've ever seen.

Saw Lacuna Coil play in Rome a couple of weeks ago - absolutely loved it. The guitar work was nice and heavy, the vocals just as great as the recordings and Christina Scabbia is even hotter in person

Saturday night as part of the same festival, I saw The Age Of Not Believing Orchestra + The Real Tuesday Weld, supported by Marcella and The Forget Me Nots.

My god, what a lineup - and opening acts don't really get much better than Marcella Puppini. I'd never heard of The Real Tuesday Weld, but they were fantastic. You may have heard them on the soundtrack to L.A. Noire - definitely a band to watch out for.

Tonight I saw A Tribute To The World Of Oliver Postgate (creator of wonderful children's television programmes, including The Clangers and Bagpuss).

This video should give you a good idea of the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_9hGevp71s

They closed by performing the music and sounds to an entire episode of The Clangers.

You can watch the episode here:

It's a bit tricky to sync up, but you can find a live performance of it here:

    Nice!

For all the metal-lers out there, nostalgia is running high this week as System of a Down play their first show after 5 years:
