  • I need some technical assisstance with my PS3

So, I found out (a long time ago) that my PS3 is quite the multimedia machine. My biggest shock was that my PS3 found ORB (a WinAMP tool) on my PS3 and it enabled me to listen to music from my computer on my PS3. I don't have a media server on my computer (WinXP Pro.), but I want to know if I can be able to watch movies and pictures from my computer on my PS3. If so, how?

I used to use an S-Video cable between my computer and my previous TV, but after the change to my new HDTV the signals are only black and white, so I figured I would try to use the PS3 as a means to communicate with my computer instead.

Can anyone help me? I need some ideas here.

I use a program called Rivet that does exactly that. It basically streams movies, music and photos to your PS3 or Xbox 360:
    http://thelittleappfactory.com/rivet/

It costs $20 (though I think there's a free version) but it's completely worth it!

Null River (guys who make Winamp) have an alternative to Rivet called Medialink (or Connect 360 for the 360 version) that you can check out as well:
    http://www.nullriver.com/products/medialink

That's also $20 but I prefer Rivet myself as it does both.

I'll check out Rivet. Thanks for the tip ADM. I'll take you our for whine or dine, depending on the outcome of the following tryout.

      ---

There is one major problem with Rivet though. It seems to be for Mac only. I'm on Windows.

Edit: On second thought, so does the Nullsoft product. Great.

Edit 2: I did some googling around, and I think I may have found something else. I'll check it out and tell about how this adventures goes later.

I found another program. TVersity ( http://tversity.com/download ) is a simple and easy-to-use program that allows you to share selected media from your computer (Windows). It works with both PS3 and XBox 360. I found it very easy to use and I have already tested it. It works splendidly.

Thanks for the tips though ADM.

Well that's no good I guess I should say get a mac! haha.

Great that you found a solution though. How's the quality of the videos when they are streamed though? As TVersity re-encodes the stream.

                Mmm convergence.

That's kind of cool - if my pc was part of my wireless network, I'd give it a go.

Lately I've just been streaming videos off my usb pen drive -- sometimes requires preparation via super, but otherwise works fine. I've been mostly using it to watch concerts and occasionally films/tv.

Seems alright. I haven't found anything to complain about yet.

I really like that it works for both PS3 and 360.

I'm using TVersity too now. Nothing to complain.
                    Thanks for the tip, Kahr.

Nice one Kahr, I'm now able to get internet radio streaming off my 360 via TVersity. No offence to Three-dawg, but fighting off super mutants to the same 5 songs was starting to grate.

I'm now trying to get last.fm working (so I can listen to it while playing games), but it looks harder to set up.

Cool. I like it when I am successful!

For me, TVersity seems to be working much better with the 360 than with the PS3. Not sure why... But it does.

Interesting, perhaps the 360 is optimised better for sharing media with PCs (being part of Microsoft's grand technology vision, etc). No idea.

I've had no luck getting last.fm working on it, unfortunately; but FIP works, and so does BBC 6 music and 5 live, which are the main ones I wanted.

The next task is to get Youtube videos working. I can get some of my uploads to work, but it doesn't want to know about my playlists or favourites.
