The Edge of Darkness: Max Payne like movie?

    Hey there,

I was poking around the net and found this trailer for Mel Gibson's upcoming movie Edge of Darkness.

Synopsis: Mel Gibson stars as Thomas Craven, a man who has spent years as a detective in Boston. When his own daughter is killed near the door of his home, Craven realizes that her death is only one piece of a puzzle filled with corruption and conspiracy, and it falls to him to discover who is behind the crime. Written by Oscar-winner William Monahan (THE DEPARTED)

Click the link and listen to his last line in the trailer. Some one has been playing Max Payne . Hell, it'll probably be better than the official Max Payne movie

I saw the movie on the weekend and it was pretty good. I thought it was a decent action flick and I felt it was better than the offical Max Payne Movie.

I remember discussing with others on the Max Payne movie tread who we thought should play Max Payne, MEl Gibson's name did come up. We did think he was to old but his Movie Payback was pretty much a Max Payne style movie. Anyway, we'll see how this movie turns out.

Oh, he's definitely a nutter (though not quite as nutty as Cruise, since it's been brought up).

Anyone who would dream up a two hour splatter-porn about Jesus is a pretty sick ****.

But I don't hate the guy. I don't really like him either. I cringe at his antisemitism, his misogyny, his homophobia, but as an artist, I admire some of his work.

It also has to be remembered that he's spent a lot of his life struggling with alcoholism. Ant his numerous and truly noble accounts of philanthropy, almost to a level unparalleled in a Hollywood actor.

Then again, he does seem to have an ego the size of all outdoors.

Put me on the hate Mel Gibson wagon. Tom Cruise is also a creeper. I can tolerate Cruise, though and actually like some of his work. Gibson, not so much. Neither one seems like they're all there up stairs, off the screen. Just get weirded out by these two.

Also, I dont know if the poster above me was being sarcastic but, Gibson is quite possibly insane. Not to mention the whole anti-semite deal but that's a whole other story. His fan base has taken quite the hit over the last few years.

I saw a poster for this the other day (link -- but it had less colour and more contrast) , and before it came into focus, I genuinely thought it was for the DVD release of Max Payne.

The fact that it's based on a BBC series and remade by the original creator is probably a good thing; but I don't like Mel Gibson -- so it's a miss for me.

Off the top of my head: The Virgin Spring, Get Carter, Death Wish, Kill Bill, Payback, The Crow, The Brave One, Gladiator, The Godfather, Mystic River, Braveheart, Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico, The Punisher, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead... I think I've made my point.

And hell, we can't forget about the entire genre of Rape/Revenge Exploitation Films of the 1970's.

It's a compelling plot. It immediately gives the protagonist a goal and makes the audience sympathetic to it (which explains why it's been used so lazily over the years, but that's no reason to right off the whole trope).

At any rate, I'm interested to see what becomes of this particular film, but I'm not wetting my panties just yet.
No, we're talking about nearly the exact script. That type of premise has been used in many a ways, some creative, some not so much...but anyway, this is essentially a carbon copy of those two movies. Go watch the three trailers. haha. It's all the same.

Technically this was written before MP and Taken - and many other films using this premise, but i agree to a point.

I personally dont want to see the same movie over and over again. And this is almost Death Sentence to a tee. Only difference is that Mel Gibson is a cop or something like that.

For the record, I liked Taken also but, Death Sentence was trash. That being said, I dont want to see this movie made again. So lame.

Who gives a shit. Not every movie has to be an Oscar winner. Taken was great.

I thought the same thing when I saw the trailer the other day. Totally Max Payne, not that Max Payne's plot is a terrible original one.
